Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week The playing season for a particular sport is defined as the period of time between the date of an institutions first practice session and the date of the last practice session or date of competition, whichever occurs later.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week For all sports other than football and basketball, the playing season may be divided into two distinct segments (championship segment and non-championship segment). The championship segment is the semester in which the NCAA Championship is conducted for your sport and the non-championship segment will be the opposite semester. Basketball will only have one segment during their season, the championship segment.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Each head coach shall determine the dates for their respective playing season, both championship and non-championship segments, by filling out a Declaration of Playing & Practice Season form for each segment of their season.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Once you have declared the dates on the Declaration of Playing & Practice Season form for the current segment you are playing in (championship segment or non-championship segment), you are “in season,” and are bound to a 20-hour week for your athletes.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week 20-Hour Week In season, a student-athlete is limited to 20 hours per week and no more than 4 hours per day. A student-athlete must also be given at least 1 calendar day off per week during a 20-hour week.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week 8-Hour Week Out-of-season and during the academic year, a student-athlete is limited to 8 hours per week, of which, not more than 2 hours per week may be spent on individual skill instruction. A student-athlete must also be given at least 2 calendar day off per week during an 8-hour week.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week 8-Hour Week – Individual Skill Instruction Individual skill instruction is permitted outside the playing season. In individual sports and team sports with a starting squad of 6 athletes or fewer, you may have up to 4 athletes working with a coach at one time. In team sports with a starting squad of 7 athletes or more, you may have up to 6 athletes working with a coach at one time.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week A student-athlete may not participate in any countable athletically related activities outside of the declared playing season during any institutional vacation period (summer, between semesters, academic year).

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Fall Sports Team Example Championship Segment (August 17th – December 6th) Pre-season – No daily and weekly hour limitations up until the first day of class or the first scheduled contest, whichever is earlier. During Season – 20-hour week up until the finals of the National Championship for your sport After the National Championship – 8-hour week up until 1 week before the beginning of the final exam period. At this point, all practices must end.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Fall Sports Team Example Non-Championship Segment (March 1st – April 14th) 45 days 1st day of classes – 8-hour week up until declared date for non-championship segment March 1st (date on Declaration of Playing Season form) – 20-hour week up until the end of the 45 day period After the 45 day period – 8-hour week up until 1 week before the beginning of the final exam period. At this point, all practices must end.

Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Spring Sports Team Example Non-Championship Segment (September 14th - October 28th) 45 days 1st day of classes – 8-hour week up until declared date for non-championship segment September 14th (date on Declaration of Playing Season form) – 20-hour week up until the end of the 45 day period After the 45 day period – 8-hour week up until 1 week before the beginning of the final exam period. At this point, all practices must end.

14 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week
Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Spring Sports Team Example Championship Segment (January 10th – NCAA Finals) During season – 20-hour week. Segment begins on January 10th or first day of classes, whichever is earlier and lasts until the NCAA Championship for your sport

15 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week
Rules Education October 5, 2009 20-Hour Week vs. 8-Hour Week Basketball Team Example Championship Segment (October 15th – March 27th) 1st day of classes – 8-hour week up until October 15th October 15th – 20-hour week up until the finals of the NCAA Basketball Championship After the National Championship – 8-hour week up until the 1 week before the beginning of the final exam period. At this point, all practices must end.
