1 Multistep Synthesis… In real life chemistry we usually work towards the synthesis of a desired compound rather than reacting two compounds just to see what happens (thanks to the work of previous scientists we already know the answer)

2 Multistep Synthesis… Planning how to do this is called Retrosynthesis.
First we must identify all the functional groups within our compound. Br O OH

3 Multistep Synthesis… We then consider the possible reactions that will form these functional groups: Br: halogenation of alkene substitution of alcohol COOH: oxidation of 1o alcohol oxidation of aldehyde Are there any reactions that would interact? Avoid using these

4 Multistep Synthesis… Now identify your starting compound: H
Decide on the order of reaction: Oxidation of aldehyde Halogenation of double bond O H

5 Multistep Synthesis… Then give your reaction equations: 1. H O OH O
Reflux H2SO4 catalyst O OH

6 Multistep Synthesis… Then give your reaction equations: 2. OH O Br OH
