Identify main concepts and brainstorm synonyms. Concrete concepts work best. Exercise: To teach students about brainstorming and keywords- Students turn to the person next to them and start discussing their topic of interest. The other listening person has a sheet of paper to write down keywords as the other person talks. Then they switch. Mexican American …students… stay in school

Using Google Scholar effectively searches broadly can be difficult to shape precise searches overwhelming number of results to review no peer-review limiter Link Google Scholar to the Walden Library Click on the “cited by” link of an article Verify peer-reviewed status in Ulrich’s Evaluating Resources

Theoretical/Conceptual Framework Books Encyclopedias Research Method Research Articles Current Literature Other subject areas Teaching that research is not linear- On a sheet of paper have students draw a line that represents their research process. Students can choose to share their drawing or you can start discussing how research is not linear.

16 Keys to Successful Online Research
No single collection or search engine will cover everything. Start in the Library collections and then go beyond. Google Scholar offers wide-coverage – but limited ability to refine searches and no peer-review limiter. Not all articles will be freely available online; know your tools for tracking down the full text. Use citation chaining and reference mining Look at dissertations Keep track of searches
