Do a search in YouTube for ‘HSBC ads’ or ‘HSBC cultural differences’. Watch at least four of the adverts. Identify four differences in social norms, customs and traditions between the UK and other cultures. Suggest four social norms that you think people raised in another culture might find odd if they visited or came to live in the UK. Explain how the videos you have watched show the importance of socialization in helping people to live together in society.

Depth, breadth and use of conjunctives One key difference in social norms and customs is in the food we eat. For example in China eels are seen as a delicacy. If you wanted to impress someone at a dinner party you might serve them eels. However in Britain eels are not generally seen as a delicacy. Instead you may serve champagne and lobster. In addition, it is considered polite to pick up your bowl and drink your soup or noodles in China; this contrasts with norms in Britain, where it would seem rude to drink from your bowl.

Use of a ‘Chain of Reasoning’ Socialization means the way in which people learn the norms and values of society. This helps people to live together in society because it means we all understand the same ‘rules’. For example, parents may teach their children that it is rude to swear. Consequently when children are at school they do not get into trouble. Once they are in the world of work, they will also understand that swearing is not acceptable; enabling them to work harmoniously with others in the workplace. In addition……
