2 Purpose & Function – Research Committee
To allocate funds for support of scholarly activities of full-time faculty of Washburn University Committee reviews requests for funds to cover reasonable expenses associated with scholarly activities

3 Definitions Scholarly Activity – Original research that results in the advancement of the arts, humanities, sciences, social sciences, or professions Reasonable Expenses: Reassigned Time Travel Equipment Materials Supplies Services Publication Costs (Including Purchase of Reprints)

4 Excluded Expenses Support of Graduate Course Work
Dissertation Research Development of New Courses/Course Materials Expenses augmenting Sweet Sabbatical Funds

5 Types Of Research Grants
Major Research project for more extensive activities Funding level - $3,001-$10,000 Small Less extensive research projects Funding level - <=$3,000

6 Grants Funded – Past Two Fiscal Years
($52,000 Allocated – VPAA Provided $6,000 “soft money”) Major Three ranging from $7,100 - $10,000 Small Fourteen ranging from $74 - $3,000 ($44,500 Spent, $2,000 Returned) One for $9,838 Nineteen ranging from $403 - $3,000

7 Deadlines Initial Opportunity for Upcoming Fiscal Year (July 1, 2006 – June 30, 2007) March 17, 2006 (Major) March 31, 2006 (Small) Final Opportunity for Upcoming Fiscal Year (Must Be Expended by June 30, 2007) Late September 2006 (Major) Early October 2006 (Small) Dates Will Be Announced/Posted on Web Prior to Beginning of Fall Semester

8 Application Process VPAA Website (Forms & Applications/Grant Application Forms) Print out either Word or PDF version of appropriate application Complete Application Form (Include IRB Approval if Necessary) Submit to Academic Dean’s Office By Deadline Academic Dean Reviews, Signs Application & Submits to VPAA Office Review Committee Evaluates Major Grants Submitted & Recommends Funding Approval or Disapproval to Research Grant Committee Major Grant Applications (Along with Review Committee Recommendations) & Small Grant Applications Evaluated by Research Committee & Funding Determinations Made (No Funding, Partial Funding, Full Funding) Applicant Notified of Committee Decision (Cc: To Academic Unit Administration)

9 Criteria Used by Committee
Is Proposed Project Research? Is Proposed Project Publishable/Significant? Can Proposed Project Be Completed During the Fiscal Year? Has Explicit and Detailed Budget Been Included? Has Applicant Received Grant Previously? If so, When? (Highest Priority Given to First Time Recipients, Lowest Priority to Second Request in Same Fiscal Year) Did Applicant Submit Required Follow-Up Report to VPAA Office Within 30 Days of Completion of a Grant-Funded Research Project? (Failure to Submit Follow-Up Report Results in Rejection for Funding) How Much Money Is Available for Allocation?

10 Process for Fund Expenditure
Must use Grant Identification Number Supplied in Award Notification Letter When Expending Funds Funds Must Be Expended for the Research Purpose Approved by the Committee Funds Must Be Expended During the Fiscal Year in Which Awarded Equipment Purchased with Grant Funds Remains Property of Washburn University Researcher Should Notify VPAA If Research Project Abandoned or Cost of Research Less Than Award So Excess Funds Can Be Reallocated For Unfunded or Partially Funded Research Projects Researcher Must Submit Follow-Up Report to VPAA Office Within 30 Days of Completion of Research
