1 WHAT WILL I LEARN TODAY? What are some terms I should know while reading 1984?

2 1984 TERM REVIEW Let’s go over eight very important vocabulary terms to know for this book. I will show you a power point slide with several key facts, details, and definitions for the vocabulary word—you job is to jot down important things. Then, you will create a visual/symbol/graphic to help define these terms… Review directions and rubric!

3 1. CENSORSHIP Censorship is the act of limiting access/information because of ____ (because it is political, sexual, vulgar, religious, violent, etc.) Censorship can be good, but it can also be evil when it limits important knowledge to the masses. We saw this in Nazi Germany with book burnings; we are also seeing this in China with what can be “googled.” Censorship often involves children, politics, and religion…

4 2. Totalitarianism Think Hitler’s Germany or Stalin’s Russia.
This is one of the most controlling types of government possible—it is worse than a dictatorship and involves TOTAL control. Think Hitler’s Germany or Stalin’s Russia. Under this type of government, the people have absolutely no rights, they live in fear, and are constantly watched for “unpatriotic” behaviors. These types of governments often are very military-police organized, and do a lot of “patriotic” duties—like songs, public hangings, etc.

5 3. GESTAPO This was the Nazi/Germany’s secret police force in WWII. Gestapo pretended to be regular people to seek out those who were against the Nazi party. The Gestapo created fear and betrayal as people turned each other in as Jewish-sympathizers. Some people were falsely accused. The Thought Police in 1984 are very similar to the Gestapo in real life.

6 4. Propaganda Think about political ads, or war posters.
These are forms of communication (posters, radio, internet, TV, advertisements) that are meant to manipulate the masses. Think about political ads, or war posters. Propaganda is very bias and is meant to manipulate you. It is not always evil though (think TV commericals) Propaganda also gets to your emotions: it can make you feel angry, sad, or patriotic.

7 5. Stalin and Communism Stalin was the leader of Russia beginning in WWII. He was one of the most violent and deadly rulers (he killed more people than Hitler) Communism is the belief that everyone shares everything; you don’t “owe” anything like you do in a capitalist society (where you owe what you earn). Instead you share and everyone is “EQUAL.” During Stalin’s rule, he murdered millions, used fear and public hangings to keep his people in line. Stalin also killed his enemies and blame them for acts they didn’t commit—he biggest enemy was his former best friend Trotsky…

8 6. Newspeak This is a fictional language in our book, 1984. It is the idea that language should be limited to the simplest (or really, dumbest) forms to keep control of the masses. Words such as “liberty, freedom, etc.” don’t exist. For example: you can use the words, “GOOD, DOUBLEGOOD, or DOUBLEPLUS GOOD, UNGOOD”

9 7. Big Brother Who does he look like? Like Hitler and Stalin…
This is the fictional ruler in the world of 1984. Who does he look like? Like Hitler and Stalin… He controls everything and watches your every move; his face is on posters everywhere. He is a form of propaganda…kind of like an evil “Santa Claus” and Winston hates him.

10 8. INGSOC/ENGLISH SOCIALISM
This is the name of the government in 1984 (it is fictional) This is a totalitarian society. Big Brother is on top and controls everyone. Note the chart: Winston belongs to the Outer Party (which is the worst place to be—no life, no control). The proles are a huge population in this world, but are too stupid to know anything. They aren’t a threat to BB and do what they want.

11 WORK TIME Create some type of visual, symbol, etc. to help illustrate these eight different terms… Work time…
