HOW GOD DEALS WITH A WAYWARD NATION LESSON 7
JoLynn Gower Summer 2019

VERSE FOR THE JOURNEY Habakkuk 3:2  LORD, I have heard the report about You and I fear. O LORD, revive Your work in the midst of the years, in the midst of the years make it known; in wrath remember mercy. What happens when God’s people neglect His Word? What happens in a nation when men run from knowing God? God gives oral warnings through His people/prophets God gives physical warnings God even uses people who don’t know him as well as those who do; he knows who they are in advance God does exactly what His Word says He will do, whether people know/believe it or not

GOD WHO REFINES Habakkuk 1:12  Are You not from everlasting, O LORD, my God, my Holy One? We will not die. You, O LORD, have appointed them to judge; And You, O Rock, have established them to correct. Habakkuk 3:17-19  Though the fig tree should not blossom and there be no fruit on the vines, though the yield of the olive should fail and the fields produce no food, though the flock should be cut off from the fold and there be no cattle in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD, I will rejoice in the God of my salvation. The Lord GOD is my strength; He has made my feet like hinds' feet, and makes me walk on my high places. 1 Corinthians 9:27... but I discipline my body and make it my slave, so that, after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified. on

DISQUALIFICATION Disqualified: adokimos: not standing the test; not being refined; not able to be used for intended purpose James 1:2-3 Consider it all joy, my brethren, when you encounter various trials, knowing that the testing of your faith produces endurance. Testing: dokimion: being refined or tried Jeremiah 6:29-30  The bellows blow fiercely, The lead is consumed by the fire; In vain the refining goes on, but the wicked are not separated.  They call them rejected silver, because the LORD has rejected them. Rejected: maas: to not be refined; to not be usable for the intended purpose

PURPOSE OF DISCIPLINE Hebrews 12:11-13  All discipline for the moment seems not to be joyful, but sorrowful; yet to those who have been trained by it, afterwards it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness. Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. Hebrews 12:12-13 (HCSB)  Therefore strengthen your tired hands and weakened knees, and make straight paths for your feet, so that what is lame may not be dislocated but healed instead. Romans 8:28 And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.

PURPOSE Purpose: prothesis: the setting forth; the purpose; the showbread in the tabernacle/temple John 4:31-34  Meanwhile the disciples were urging Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat.” But He said to them, "I have food to eat that you do not know about.”  So the disciples were saying to one another, "No one brought Him anything to eat, did he?” Jesus said to them, "My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me and to accomplish His work. Ephesians 2:8-10  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not as a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.

WHY DON’T WE KNOW THEM? Does God withhold His will for us until we’re ready? Romans 12:1-2 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect. Prove: dokimazo (dokimezein); to assay STEP ONE: Present the unsaved/unwilling body; the brain that takes in information is part of the body STEP TWO: Submit to mind renewal by the Holy Spirit; the mind is part of the soul STEP THREE: Do what you know to do; stop doing anything that God tells you to stop doing
