1 “We desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises” Hebrews 6:11-12 Press on to maturity!

Hebrews 6:13-20 Take refuge in God’s unfailing promise!

3 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” Hebrews 6:11-12

4 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
God gave Abraham the highest possible assurance that His promise was trustworthy (verses 13-14) 13 For when God made a promise to Abraham, since he had no one greater by whom to swear, he swore by himself, 14 saying, “Surely I will bless you and multiply you.” “By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord, because you have done this and have not withheld your son, your only son, I will surely bless you, and I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and as the sand that is on the seashore…” Genesis 22:16-17

5 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
God gave Abraham the highest possible assurance that His promise was trustworthy (verses 13-14) Abraham’s faith was proven to be genuine and was rewarded with the promise (verse 15) 15 And thus Abraham, having patiently waited, obtained the promise. “God tested Abraham and said to him, ‘Abraham!’ And he said, ‘Here I am.’ He said, ‘Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.’” Genesis 22:1-2

6 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
God gave Abraham the highest possible assurance that His promise was trustworthy (verses 13-14) Abraham’s faith was proven to be genuine and was rewarded with the promise (verse 15) “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead, from which, figuratively speaking, he did receive him back.” Hebrews 11:17-19

7 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
God gave Abraham the highest possible assurance that His promise was trustworthy (verses 13-14) Abraham’s faith was proven to be genuine and was rewarded with the promise (verse 15) “…your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies, and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed, because you have obeyed my voice.” Genesis 22:17-18

8 I. God’s promise to Abraham was certain because it was rooted in who God is (verses 13-15)
God gave Abraham the highest possible assurance that His promise was trustworthy (verses 13-14) Abraham’s faith was proven to be genuine and was rewarded with the promise (verse 15) “Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered up his son Isaac on the altar? You see that faith was active along with his works, and faith was completed by his works; and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness’” James 2:21-23

9 II. God’s promise of salvation to believers is just as unchangeable as His promise to Abraham (verses 16-20) God has a great desire to convince His children that our status as heirs of salvation is impossible to change (verses 16-18a) 16 For people swear by something greater than themselves, and in all their disputes an oath is final for confirmation. 17 So when God desired to show more convincingly to the heirs of the promise the unchangeable character of his purpose, he guaranteed it with an oath, 18 so that by two unchangeable things, in which it is impossible for God to lie…”

11 II. God’s promise of salvation to believers is just as unchangeable as His promise to Abraham (verses 16-20) God has a great desire to convince His children that our status as heirs of salvation is impossible to change (verses 16-18a) Our hope for the promise of salvation is anchored in our soul to the immovable presence of God (verses 18b-20) 18 …we who have fled for refuge might have strong encouragement to hold fast to the hope set before us. 19 We have this as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul, a hope that enters into the inner place behind the curtain, 20 where Jesus has gone as a forerunner on our behalf, having become a high priest forever after the order of Melchizedek.
