The 2020 Census is Critically Important to Berrien County Annual value of each person counted to Michigan in census-based federal funding. That’s $18,000 per person over the 10-year Census period. $1,800 Annual funding at risk for Berrien County. The Census Bureau projects a response rate of 80.9% which means Berrien County could lose $44 million annually ($440 million over 10 years) in our fair share of census-based federal funding. $44 million The Census Counts! Census-based funding includes: Infrastructure - Highways, Roads, Bridges Education - Title I (Improving the Academic Achievement of the Disadvantaged), IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act), Head Start School Lunches SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) WIC (Women, Infants, & Children Food and Nutrition Service) Child Care S-Chip (State Child Health Insurance Program) Housing (Section 8) Employment Opportunities Public Health – Medicare, Medicaid, Health Centers Transportation Census Data is used for redistricting Apportioning seats to the U.S. House of Representatives Redistricting for state representatives Electoral college votes School district assignment areas For questions, contact Kathy Stady, Census Hub Coordinator, Berrien Community Foundation, , National Census Count Day April 1, 2020

Late March 2020 The Census Bureau sends a unique Household Identification Code and instructions for completing the Census. or March – April 2020 Every household completes the Census via Phone or Internet. Include every person living in your home. If you prefer a paper form, you may request one. If Census information isn’t completed by April 30, a Census worker will come to your home to complete the form. Tips for Answering the Census Include each person living in your home on April 1, 2020 … infants, kids, parents, grandparents, grandchildren or others who are living in your home. The Census counts everyone who is living in the U.S., regardless of citizenship or age. Renters complete the Census for their address. If you have more than one home, complete the Census for your primary address. Households without a physical address such as P.O. Box or Rural Route will be visited by a Census worker. They will not receive a Census form in the mail. Assisted living and other group living facilities will be visited by a Census worker for in- person counts. Questions on the Census: Name, age, date of birth, sex, race, ethnicity, own or rent, head of household or relationship to head of household and possibly citizenship status (June 2019 Supreme Court ruling expected). Information on the Census form is confidential. By law, census information is not shared with the IRS, Social Security, Medicare, courts, law enforcement or any other government agency. Internet questionnaire and assistance will be available in 12 Non-English languages. Language glossaries and guides will be available in 59 Non-English languages.
