2 How can BREXIT affect Northern Ireland’s economic, political and social system ?

10 III – The border problem and the last negotiations

11 The 3 different possible outcomes :
Northern Ireland could stay in the Customs Union while the rest of the UK leaves it. The EU accepts a hard border between NI and the Republic, which could affect the balance of power among the communities within NI. The entire UK remains in the Customs Union, which would maintain the statu quoi for both nationalists and unionists but at the same time which would disappoint the Pro-Brexiters

12 The ins and the outs of the current negotiations concerning the border question
The demands of both nationalists and unionists can influence the negotiations. The best for the EU would be that NI remains part of the EU’s Customs Union. British negotiators have now reached a deadlock : UK tried to cloud the Irish border issue among the larger negotiations. The EU has the obvious advantage of its strong bargaining position and will definitely carry weight in the finale decision.
