6 Elementary School Division
Fall 2016 Elementary School Division Second Place School: Hampstead Academy, Hampstead Equity: $102,935.86 Advisor: Ms. Cecelia Carroll Team Members: Rachael Stallings Now to honor the students and teachers for their hard work! Again this year, we offered multiple game windows during the Fall and Spring semesters allowing teachers to select the time frame that best fits with their schedule. We will present the InvestWrite Awards at the end of the program. We’ll present the second place teams their awards first, and then on to the first place teams who will briefly discuss their investment strategy. I ask that teachers come up to the podium to introduce their students and briefly mention their involvement in the program (what class used the program, how it was perceived, etc). As for prizes, we are providing SMG bags for all teams, and first place teams will also receive medals along with an SMG banner to be displayed in the school to commemorate their success. 31 InvestWrite Competition
Fall 2016 High School Division InvestWrite Competition National #4 Winner! Student: Jessica Nelson School: Concord High School Advisor: Mr. William Crowley Now onto the high school InvestWrite competition. Close to 4,000 high school students across the country participated in the Fall and 1,550 made it to the final judging round. In ME, we had 21 high school essays making it to the final judging round. The writing assignment included the following for our high school students: When making decisions about investing during The Stock Market Game, what are the five most important items you should research before buying a stock, bond or mutual fund? Choose an investment and explain how your research led you to select that investment based on your choice of one of the following: 1. Shorter term / Higher risk 2. Longer term / Lower risk Given your current saving goals and using your research strategy, if you were making a “real world” investment, what percentage of your current portfolio would you place in this kind of investment and why? Research tools Stephanie discussed included an evaluation of the safety of the investment, the potential rate of return, the liquidity of the money invested, the additional commissions of the investment, the tax status of the investment, and most importantly the diversification of the investment. These 5 criteria, led the student’s team to choose a moderately risky, diversified investment for the long term gain, which would ensure a financial backing derived from the Rule of 72, for retirement age. Investing in a mutual fund like Janus Balanced Fund, would be a beneficial investment. Looking at goals and strategies, the student would place some where around 30% of the investment into a mutual fund like Janus Balanced. The diversification allows growth, with less of risk. I conducted a prize patrol up in Sabbatus earlier this semester to award Stephanie her prizes, but wanted to acknowledge her efforts here for writing such a great essay in the Fall.

The program is such a complement to The Stock Market Game program and serves as such a great culminating activity! Not to mention the great prizes the students can win!   A couple of house keeping items – if there are any misspellings on students’ awards, please let me know and I will be sending you an shortly if students would like to writing thank you notes to encourage our funders to continue their generosity and keep the program at no cost.
