1 I Am Who I Am Learning Objective: To explore what makes you who you are. I can reflect on what makes me, me. I can reflect on how we change with time. I can evaluate the question ‘are you the same person you were a year ago?’

2 What makes you who you are?
On your piece of sugar paper draw the outline of a person. Around it write down everything that makes you who you are and an individual. Pose the question to students ‘what makes you who you are?’ Ask small groups of students to draw the outline of a person on their piece of sugar paper. They need to write around it everything they think makes them who they are and an individual.

3 What makes you who you are?
How do your ideas compare? Voice DNA Hair Colour Nickname Sense of humour Memories Take feedback from students, there are some ideas on the PPT slide. Have they come up with similar ideas? Gender Opinions Academic Achievement Birthday

4 But is the soul real – what do you think?
There are those, including many religious believers, who would argue that we have a soul which is seen as the immaterial part of you that will survive death and contains the essence of each person. For example, Christians believe that when you die your soul will have eternal life when your physical body has died. It will either go to heaven or hell depending on your judgement by God. Hindus also believe in the soul which is known as the atman. They believe your soul will also survive the death of the physical body and will be reincarnated into a new body, this could be a human, animal or plant which all have souls. This will all depend on your karma from your previous lives. Now introduce the idea of a soul, which many people, including many religious believers say it is the immaterial part of someone that survives death and contains the essence of each person. Briefly explain beliefs about the soul in Christianity and Hinduism. Then pose the question – is the soul real? Show the clips from The Simpsons where Bart sells his soul then take some feedback on what they think. But is the soul real – what do you think? – part 1 – part3 – part 2

5 I Am Who I Am Learning Objective: To explore what makes you who you are. I can reflect on what makes me, me. I can reflect on how we change with time. I can evaluate the question ‘are you the same person you were a year ago?’

6 What is different about them?
Is this the same person? Is this the same person? What is different about them? Now that students have started thinking about what makes them who they are, get them to start thinking whether changes in people mean they are still the same person. Show the youtube clip of a boy who took a photo of himself everyday through his teenage years. Ask students whether he is still the same person from beginning to end and what is different about them.

7 Are you the same person you were when you were born?
The Ship of Theseus Are you the same person you were when you were born? Is this the same ship? Now introduce the philosophical story of the Ship of Theseus. The story is explained through the BBC clip – it is basically about a ship which keeps needing repairs so that eventually every part of the ship is new. Watch the clip up to 3:30 then pose the question ‘is this the same ship?’ Discuss this as a class – use Add, Build, Contest questioning and Pose, Pause, Pounce, Bounce. Then watch the last part of the clip and pose the question ‘are you the same person you were when you were born?’ Following this discussion bring students back to our original questions – what makes them who they are? What makes you, you?

8 I Am Who I Am Learning Objective: To explore what makes you who you are. I can reflect on what makes me, me. I can reflect on how we change with time. I can evaluate the question ‘are you the same person you were a year ago?’

9 Write a reflection in your books that answers the questions:
What makes you, you? Are you the same person you were a year ago? Ask students to complete a written reflection on their discussion. Each student needs to answer the questions: what makes you, you? And are you the same person you were a year ago?

10 Are you the same person you were a year ago?
Vote With Your Feet Are you the same person you were a year ago? To finish the lesson ask all students to indicate their opinion on the question ‘are you the same person you were a year ago’ by completing a vote with your feet activity. Yes No
