2 Aims & Objectives Aims: To improve young people’s experience of the School Games and to ensure that young people’s voices are heard Objectives: Provide opportunities to students to express their views about the School Games Gain a better understanding of students’ sport interests and attitudes towards competition Gain a better understanding of the barriers that schools face in regard to participation-with a particular focus on small schools

3 Methodology 173 primary & 90 secondary students provided feedback during the following competitions: 17th April 2019: Primary Schools Orienteering, Preston 5th March 2019: Primary schools Standalone athletics, Blackpool Sports centre. 8th March 2019: Secondary schools Handball competition, Preston 13th March 2019: Secondary athletics finals, Blackpool 19 PE teachers completed an online survey on barriers to participation 13 primary PE teachers and 6 secondary PE teachers The survey was distributed through AL partners. The partners distributes the link to their own networks The survey ran between 1st March and 25th March 2019

5 Primary school students who are inactive/overweight or have never represented their schools
We asked 32 primary students who are inactive/overweight or never represented their schools before to tells us what they think about the competition. The majority (20) said that having fun was the most important. 10 said that they like being with friends and only 2 competing

6 The most popular activities among primary students
Boys 1 Football 2 Running 3 Swimming 4 Dodgeball 5 Rugby Girls 1 Running 2 Dancing 3 Swimming 4 Football 5 Netball It is interesting that orienteering and athletics were not mentioned by the students even though they were competing on those sports

10 Teachers’ survey Only 19 responses (13 primary & 6 secondary)
The majority of the responses came from small primary schools (53%) Despite the low response, schools were from various areas across Lancashire Medium 21% – Large 26%

Football 100% Gymnastics 74% Netball Handball Dance 95% Swimming Rounders Tennis Athletics (includes cross-country) 90% Badminton 68% Rugby (includes tag rugby) Table tennis Basketball 84% Hockey 63% Cricket Orienteering Fitness wellbeing champions in the workplace can provide time and resources to empower their colleagues Other sports that were mentioned less than half of the responders include: Cheerleading, Cycling, Golf, Trampolining, Yoga, Boccia, Boxing, Volleyball, Climbing, Fencing, Triathlon, Softball, Angling, Archery, Baseball, Equestrian, Goalball, Judo, Lacrosse
