2 What is Story Quest? Story Quest will encourage families to get outside together and take part in adventure story trails around their local neighbourhood. The project has two objectives: Increase activity levels in families in two areas of Stoke Build a culture of reading in families in the target areas, by increasing confidence and motivation to read. Local families will be given an activity pack, containing the story trail, instructions and fun items such as wristbands and wallcharts to track their progress. Reading the story together will guide them around the trail, exploring their local area and sharing an activity as a family. literacytrust.org.uk

3 Why is it needed? Within Stoke, only 23% of children are active for the recommended 60 minutes daily, with 30% active less for 30 minutes a day on average Stoke-on-Trent is one of the most deprived cities in England. 53% live in areas that are among the 20% most deprived in the country Both Burslem and Tunstall are in the top 10% most deprived areas nationally In 2018, just 42% of pupils from a deprived background in Stoke reached the expected standard at KS2 in reading and writing literacytrust.org.uk

4 How will we engage parents?
Knowing the challenges of engaging parents in these areas, we are using a number of different avenues to reach them: Through primary schools and community organisations – we will hold school launch events, and recruit pupils to ‘champion’ the trails Through a publicity campaign, online and in print, including a major public launch Completion of the trails will be incentivised, with all participants receiving rewards for completion as well as the opportunity to enter a prize draw Street Games will hold a series of engagement events to recruit families, and showcase low cost/no cost ways of getting active in the area We have built the programme along social marketing principles, looking to ensure that it is easy to undertake and attractive to the families. literacytrust.org.uk
