Students learn how computer systems work and how technology is beneficial to society. With the use of technology increasingly globally it is an excellent subject to learn how technology is utilised productively in businesses before they start the world of work for themselves. It is important for students to be able to write in depth answers to questions about how technology could be useful or detrimental as many questions in the exam paper are over 4 marks and lots of blank lines to write answers. Topics such as networking will be learnt which will let the students know how a company with many offices in a country can use technology to communicate between these offices using technology. How members of staff working within the company building itself compare to staff members that often work outside the building have different needs and requirements in order to do their job for example students will need to know the benefits of using mobile data for members of staff working on the move. The curriculum is designed for students to take their existing knowledge from Key stage 4 about computers and to think about how that can be applied to the real world for the worlds population to make use of that technology to make their jobs more productive. For key stage 4 students may have made a website to specific requirements, however in key stage 5 the students will learn much more about the implications of website design choices and how they compare to other websites providing similar services.
