1 Chapters 6-7 Discussion Questions
What are some events that happen that show that power has shifted to Jack from Ralph? What is the symbolic significance of the parachutist landing near the signal fire? Jack states, “We don't need the conch anymore. It’s time some people knew they've got to keep quiet and leave deciding things to the rest of us.” What is the symbolic significance of that statement? Simon has logical reasons (Pg. 103) why he can’t believe in the Beast. What are they? Chapter 7 What is foreshadowed (pg.111 IN ITALICS) in chapter 7? (Think of Simon) How does Ralph’s savage side present itself? Was their reenactment of the hunt “just a game”? Explain the significance of Robert’s statement when he says,, "You want a real pig because you've got to kill him.“ (Think of foreshadowing) Comment on the boys’ appearance and find a quote that demonstrates the symbolism of their appearance. Ralph, Jack, and Simon originally explored the mountain. Explain the significance of Roger replacing Simon in the second exploration of the mountain. Find a quote that foreshadows Roger is evil. How does the apparent existence of “the beast” strengthen Jack’s (rather than Ralph’s) hold over the boys?
