Did you know that there are many ways in which process
art experiences support children's healthy development?

You may notice that the art your child brings home from school may sometimes be difficult to identify. These masterpieces are called process art.
Process art is open-ended and child-directed, meaning the child selects the materials and methods for creating art. There is no right or wrong way
to create with process art
experiences.
Young children enjoy process art because it offers them the freedom to explore art materials, create, and express themselves. Process art is more meaningful to young children because there are no rules to follow and no end-product that must be created. Process art empowers children to create freely, while crafts force children to comply to adult rules and standards.

Process art offers opportunities for young children to develop the following skills:
Physical: Develops fine motor skills in hands necessary for future writing
Language: Develops vocabulary and conversation skills
Social and Emotional: Helps develop focus and attention
Create a space for art materials in your home
Offer tape, glue, and scissors
Offer recycled materials (like magazines) for creating collages
Offer a variety of tools for drawing like markers, crayons, and colored pencils
Offer blank paper
