1 Today’s Agenda…3-12-13 Bellringer: Fill in the blank worksheet
Discuss Moon Logs Review Seasons, Solstices, Equinoxes Notes/Chart on solstices and equinoxes for 4th and 6th period Notes/Foldable on Phases of the Moon

2 Review True or False Day and night are caused by Earth’s revolution around the sun. Earth’s path as it revolves around the sun is called its orbit. It takes the Earth one year to rotate on its axis.

3 Review Earth has seasons because the distance between the Earth and the Sun changes. During a solstice the sun is directly overheard at the equator.

4 The Phases Of the Moon Study Pack #6

5 Today’s Targets… I can explain what causes the moon phases.
I can gather data on moon phases and use this data to make predictions. I can explain how interactions between the Sun, moon, and Earth are responsible for the day, MONTH, and year.

6 The Phases of the Moon The shape, or PHASE, of the moon depends on the position of the sun, moon, and earth As the moon revolves around the earth we see different amounts of the lighted side of the moon at different times

7 The Phases of the Moon 8 phases
Takes about one month to go through all phases Gradually moves from phase to phase Begin with new moon Waxing: “getting larger” Waning “getting smaller”

8 Why are the moon phases important?
Planting crops Hunting and fishing Myths

9 New Moon The moon is between the earth and sun
The half of the moon lit by the sun is opposite the half that faces the earth

10 What does new moon look like?
Not visible from earth because its lighted half faces away from the earth You may think there is no moon that night

11 Waxing Crescent More than new moon, but less than first quarter
A small slice of the moon is visible on the right side Some compare it to a thumb nail, others to a banana

12 What does waxing crescent look like?

13 First Quarter One half of sunlit side is visible
The right side of the moon is visible

14 What does first quarter look like?

15 Waxing Gibbous More than first quarter but less than full moon
The moon is lit on the right side

16 What does waxing gibbous look like?

17 Full Moon The earth is between the moon and the sun
When all of the sunlit side is visible Subject of many myths

18 Is the myth true? Some people believe that babies are born on or around full moon! Is this true? Let’s investigate!

19 What does full moon look like?

20 Waning Gibbous Less than full moon, more than third quarter
The left side of the moon is lighted

21 What does waning gibbous look like?

22 Third Quarter Sometimes called “last quarter”
The left side of the moon is visible

23 What does third quarter look like?

24 Waning Crescent Less than third quarter, but more than new moon
A small slice of the moon is visible on the left side Also compare it to a thumbnail or a banana

25 What does waning crescent look like?

26 The Phases of the Moon NEW MOON Waxing Crescent First Quarter
Waxing Gibbous Full Moon Waning Gibbous Third Quarter Waning Crescent

27 Phases of the Moon Let’s Try It!!

28 What did you learn? True or False The moon’s light comes from the sun.
When the moon is waxing it looks to be getting smaller. During a new moon the moon is not visible. It takes 2 weeks for the moon to go through all its phases.
