1 Fraction Estimation Estimate solutions to problems with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals and use the estimates to assess the reasonableness of results in the context of the problem.

2 I can… Estimate fractions and mixed numbers using benchmark fractions Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

3 Rules… To round a fraction to the nearest benchmark, use the following rules: If the numerator is much less than the denominator, we round the fraction to 0. If the numerator is about ½ of the denominator we round the fraction to ½ . If the numerator is much more than the denominator, we round the fraction to 1.

4 Examples Round ¾ Since ¾ is greater than ½, we round up to 1 1
Therefore, ¾ rounded to the nearest whole number is 1 1 1 2 3 4 4 4

5 Examples Round ¼ to the nearest whole number
Since ¼ is less than ½, we round down to 0 Therefore, ¼ rounded to the nearest whole number is 0 1 1 2 3 4 4 4

6 Examples Round to the nearest whole number
2 Round to the nearest whole number Since is equal to ½, we round up to 1 Therefore, rounded to the nearest whole number is 1 4 1 1 2 3 4 4 4 2 4 2 4

7 3 10 3 10 Round the fraction. 1 1 2 would round to Think:
What would be half of 10? 10 1 1 2 3 would round to 10

8 7 10 1 7 10 Round the fraction. 1 1 2 would round to Think:
What would be half of 10? 10 1 1 2 7 1 would round to 10

9 5 10 1 2 5 10 Round the fraction. 1 1 2 would round to Think:
What would be half of 10? 10 1 1 2 5 1 2 would round to 10

10 4 10 1 2 4 10 Round the fraction. 1 1 2 would round to Think:
What would be half of 10? 10 1 1 2 4 1 2 would round to 10

11 Round the mixed number to the nearest whole number.
1 4 5 4 1 5 4 2 1 4 4 would round to 5

12 Round the fraction to the nearest whole number.
3 5 4 5 1 6 5 2 3 rounded to the nearest whole number is 6 5 4

13 Estimate the difference.
1 5 6 1 4 6 rounded to the nearest whole number 6 2 4

14 rounded to the nearest whole number
Estimate the sum. 1 7 3 + 2 5 10 rounded to the nearest whole number 3 + 3 6

15 Turn and Talk Your estimate of the amount of ribbon should be high so that you will not run out of ribbon before finishing the costumes.

16 Round each fraction to get the HIGHEST estimate!
1 7 + Round each fraction to get the HIGHEST estimate! 5 8 1 2 1 + 1 =1 2

17 Turn and Talk Your estimate of the amount of flour should be high so that you will not have enough flour.

18 Round each fraction to get the HIGHEST estimate!
3 1 + 2 Round each fraction to get the HIGHEST estimate! 4 3 1 + 3 =4

19 I can… Estimate fractions and mixed numbers using benchmark fractions Self Assessment 5- I can do it without help & teach others. 4- I can do this with no help, but I don’t know if I can explain it. 3- I can do this with a little help. 2- I can do this with a lot of help! 1- I don’t have a clue.

20 Daily Check 6.1 in your math notebook
