A, Two weeks after institution of interferon therapy, showing diffuse slowing (in the range of 2 to 5 Hz) with widespread quasiperiodic sharp waves occurring bilaterally over left and right hemispheres. B, Later segment from same recording after patient had received 4 mg of diazepam (Valium) intravenously; frequency of sharp waves decreased, but clinical status of patient remained unchanged. Generalized slowing of activity persisted. The faster frequencies are caused by effects of diazepam. C, Two weeks after cessation of interferon therapy, showing reduction in sharp waves and decrease in slow-wave abnormalities, although some diffuse slowing of background activity is still present.
