3 Group A: paragraphs 1-4 Why is Dr. King writing this letter?
Why did they target Birmingham, Alabama for their campaign? What steps did Dr. King & his group take in Birmingham before the campaign? Why do you think he thought it was important to talk about those steps in such detail?

4 Group B: paragraphs 5-8 What’s the goal and benefit of non-violent, direct action? Dr. King writes, “privileged groups seldom give up privileges voluntarily” and “freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor, it must be demanded by the oppressed.” Do you agree? Why or why not? Can you give examples? Dr. King also writes, “justice too long delayed is justice denied.” What does he mean by this? Do you agree? Why or why not? Why does he list so many examples of discrimination and violence?

5 Group C: paragraphs 9-14 Dr. King argues that there are “two types of laws: just and unjust” and that it is our “moral responsibility to disobey unjust laws.” Do you agree? Why or why not? Why is segregation unjust? Where have we heard this argument before? He doesn’t advocate for “evading or defying the law,” just disobeying it. What’s the difference? Why is that important?

6 Group D: paragraphs 15-End
What is the “great stumbling block”? Why is this more frustrating? What are the two opposing forces in the Black community? Why are they divided? Why is the difference between what white ministers are saying and what MLK wants them to say important? Dr. King writes, “one day the South will recognize its real heroes.” Has the South recognized them? If no, why not? What can we do about that?
