Make up and the older client As the skin ages it tends to become thinner and it changes colour. The skin becomes lined as the tone is lost in the skin and muscles. Very often the client has used the same colours and techniques for years without considering the changes that have taken place.

In general A rule of thumb for applying make up for older women is to not use too much. When make-up is too heavy, and doesn’t blend into, it can actually make you look older. Careful selection and application of make up for older women can enhance any mature women’s beauty. Soft application and colour designed to highlight natural beauty, while downplaying signs of aging, usually results in melting the years away.

The base Foundation for mature skin should be close to medium-weight. Mature skin has wrinkles and a heavy foundation can actually make the wrinkles look deeper. A sheer or medium-weight foundation will reflect light and cover up many blemishes. An oil-based foundation should be applied on top of a daytime moisturizer designed for mature skin. Use concealer generously to cover up any aging lines or blemishes. Use loose translucent powder with a powder brush only once in the morning to set the makeup, reapplying often can accentuates lines and wrinkles. Use a fluffy brush alone for the touch up.

The eyes Frosted eye shadows can actually make you look younger but use them properly. Use the lightest shade under the brow, a darker one close to the lashes and the darkest on the crease and blend them properly. Be soft and subtle in the choice of makeup and colours for the youthful look or get professional help! Blends of pink and grey eye shadows soften greying hair. Use a soft eyebrow pencil that matches the hair colour. The eye shadows used should be cream based, because they will moisturize while hiding flaws. The appearance of dark bags under the eyes can be minimized with a concealer which is one shade lighter than the foundation.

The cheeks Use a very small amount of blush on the cheeks that creates a glow. Use cream blushes in golden almond and copper tones and blend them gently from cheeks to temples in an arc for a soft transparent effect.

The lips Use soft matte lip colours in pink, berry, coral or peach shades to make the lips fuller. Make up for older women should include lipstick with moisturizer in the formula. Older women’s lips will dry out and need frequent moisturizing Use a lip liner or outline with the lipstick using a stiff brush before colouring in the lips
