1 How Do You Feel? 1. Work in pairs and do the questionnaire.
Talking point 1. Work in pairs and do the questionnaire. How Do You Feel? Now exchange your choices with your partner with brief explanation for the choices you’ve made.

2 1 (a) I’m not particularly good at singing. So I
Talking point Example answers 1 (a) I’m not particularly good at singing. So I cannot really choose this one. √(b) This is a fact. But so what, I can still enjoy myself and entertain others. After all, it is fun to go out with good friends. (c) It is boring to just watch everyone – I don’t want to be a “wallflower”, just sitting on the edge of the room and never joining in. That’s not me.

3 √ (a) You know this is a trick or strategy to calm my nerves.
Talking point Example answers 2 √ (a) You know this is a trick or strategy to calm my nerves. If you feel the same, try this way. I assure you it will work. (b) What happens if I have to talk about serious stuff? So smiling won’t help me. (c) I can’t do that! I can’t say no to myself.

4 √ (a) Well, this is my instinct. Sometimes in life you
Talking point Example answers 3 √ (a) Well, this is my instinct. Sometimes in life you have to follow your instinct, you know. (b) I won’t do that! It sounds like a policeman. (c) Well, I might think that way, but I have to be positive about life and think most people are nice by nature. So this is not my choice.

5 (a) To be honest, I don’t love lying in the sun. I
Talking point Example answers 4 (a) To be honest, I don’t love lying in the sun. I will just get sunburnt! What’s the fun then? √ (b) I do love listening to the sea, what a splendid idea! Sounds really relaxing, doesn’t it? (c) Sunburn shouldn’t really be a problem, although I don’t like getting sunburnt. You just make sure to put on some lotion to protect your skin. So this reason won’t stop me.

6 (a) I’m not that kind of panicking person.
Talking point Example answers 5 (a) I’m not that kind of panicking person. After all, why panic if you have done the work and prepared properly? (b) Well, don’t you think it is too early for the revision? You may forget everything before the exam. √ (c) That’s me. After all, I think I’ve done the main work, so I can revise quite quickly.

7 Example answers 6 (a) This is boasting. Even if someone speaks good
Talking point Example answers 6 (a) This is boasting. Even if someone speaks good English at our level, it’s another story to do interpreting properly. √ (b) Guess what? This is another trick of mine when I talk with Westerners. If I don’t know what to say in English, I just teach them how to say it in Chinese. In this way, they may find a way to teach me how to say the things I don’t know in English. (c) Well, we are always having exams, but the interpreting opportunity is rare. This is a silly choice. We should take up this kind of opportunity, even if we feel it’s quite a challenge.

8 Group work Class performance
