Bone marrow starts to produce blood in addition to the liver and spleen

5. MONTH 5
Has vocal cords and can cry, can hear
Bones begin to harden, baby’s size increases dramatically
Has hair on head, weights about one pound, and is about 12 inches long

6. MONTH 4
Genital organs differentiated, swims, kicks, grasps with hands, but still not felt by the mother
Skin completely developed, hair begins to develop
Bone layers form and calcium deposits in bone
Can make facial expressions, voluntary muscle movements

7. MONTH 3
Intestines almost finished, internal genitals formed, tooth buds form
Squints, swallows, moves tongue and can make a fist
Has fingernails, breathing movements, all body systems working, urine produced
250,000 neurons/minute are produced
Weights about one ounce

8. MONTH 2
Eye, ear, digestive and respiratory system begin to form
Brain waves recorded, skeleton complete, reflexes present
May start thumb sucking since fingers and toes develop, umbilical cord develops
All body systems present

9. MONTH 1
Conception and implantation
Mother’s menses stop
Heart begins to beat
Pumps blood through own circulatory system, has own blood type
