Microscope Parts and Functions
2
Ocular lens/Eyepiece The lens through which you look; magnifies the object 10x (10 times its normal size)
3
Body tube Maintains the correct distance between the ocular lens and the objective lens
4
Arm Supports the body tube
5
Revolving Nosepiece Holds the objectives and can be turned to change from one magnification to another
6
Low-power objective lens
Provides the least magnification; magnifies the object 4x (4 times its normal size)
7
High-power objective lens
Provides the most magnification; magnifies the object 40x (40 times its normal size)
8
Coarse adjustment knob
Moves the body tube up and down for focusing
9
Moves the body tube slightly to bring the image into sharper focus
Fine adjustment knob Moves the body tube slightly to bring the image into sharper focus

Stage Supports the slide
11
Stage clips Hold the slide in place
12
Controls the amount of light coming through the stage
Diaphragm Controls the amount of light coming through the stage
13
Provides light for viewing the slide
Light/Mirror Provides light for viewing the slide
14
Supports the microscope
Base Supports the microscope

Determining Total Magnification on the Microscope
The total magnification of the microscope is equal to the magnifications of two lenses multiplied together. Eyepiece X Objective Lens = Total Magnification
