1 R2E Follow-Ups and Project
R2E Meeting, September 8th 2010 M. Brugger

2 R2E News & Announcements
Green light of R2E xMasActions (confirmed by to J.C. Guillaume) Report from the last LMC MTP and impact on R2E -> Project Status Equipment Inventories (in final approval process), see R2E Publications (1, 2, 3, 4) xMas-Break Preparation meeting (news: Anne-Laure) Introduction of Marco and Luisella Luisella: support for WBS, project documentation and planning help with P8 calculations (monitoring benchmark) help with P1/5 calculations (idem) Marco: Monte-Carlo Calculations (current focus: P8, P1) H4IRRAD Monitoring & Early Measurements RadWG member, R2E Secretary Next week announcements: special RadWG meeting for H4IRRAD discussion on safe-rooms (date/time to be defined) Next R2E meeting: Thursday next week: main subject is the project mandate and organization

3 Urgent R2E Actions Solution Finding / Clarifications & Decisions (follow-up): P5 comparison of options (three ‘solutions’) and impact on planning/costs (Anne-Laure) Open questions after CMS visit, see Anne-Laure/Markus (Anne-Laure) Open questions for solution with gallery, see s following the discussion with Christoph and Martin (M. Gastal) Gain between Bypass and UJ561 (cabling mainly),… -> Cost/Planningt (Anne-Laure) How can the planning become shorter (e.g., cable installations in two shifts) Shielding installation during xMasBreak: (Anne-Laure) RRs: no due to risk and impact on power connections UJ76: yes UJ14/16: to be verified with consequences on adjacent inner triplet -> if no risk, then yes Shielding Purchase: (Anne-Laure) Table with shielding details per area, open questions, e.g., 2nd layer in US85 (Michael) Reserve of 50% (of existing stock) – to be partly ‘compensated’ by new ‘reserve’ (Michael) Installation of heavy blocks (>7t): Markus discussed with Serge and it might be feasible for the lower layers in the RRs, Serge will verify and keep us informed Reserve in total amount: 10% Status of complementary order (200 blocks) -> is this in the pipeline? (Michael) Budget code to be defined for purchase, green light for divisional request (Roberto)

4 Urgent R2E Actions Solution Finding / Clarifications & Decisions (follow-up): P8 cable installation close to cryo installation: only those actions with no risk to operation to be performed (Anne-Laure) Safe-Room P7/P5 solution finding (Markus) Unlikely that shielding at P5 will be sufficient for operation until 2016 Safe-room situation needs to be reviewed (see workshop), also for P7 P7: VAC-racks -> Sylvain wanted to have a last iteration before the layout is frozen P7: racks related to access -> details not clear (Sylvain), how much can be combined and could they also be switched off during operation (like access gates in P1/2/8)? (Anne-Laure) P1 (UJ14/16) / P2 (UJ23) / P8 (UJ87) access gates: oral agreement on procedure -> to be clarified that we don’t relocate the access gate and it’s the equipment owner’s responsibility to assure the implementation of the procedure (Anne-Laure) P8 shielding verification Preliminary update of simulations shows that the shielding of the safe-room is coherent with the future shielding of the cryo-racks and towards the UW85 (Marco) Additional simulations ongoing in order to verify comparison with monitors, as well as the long-term need/possibility of a second shielding layer

5 Start of Mid-Term Activities
SCL R&D (Amalia) Started Cable tests scheduled, in time for 2011 goal WG will be created and keep direct contact with R2E Power-Converter R&D (Yves) R&D is in the medium-term plan, activity to be started now Fellow will arrive or is already there First steps: First conceptual design studies Radiation tests of existing power-converters Aiming for a first conceptual design review in autumn 2010 Discussion with TE/EPC and F. Bordry to be organized (Markus) H4IRRAD (Marco) Generic calculations available No showstopper so far Next step: detailed layout, requirements (TE/EPC), RP issues Aiming for radiation tests in February/March Special RadWG scheduled for next week

6 Reports and Follow-Ups
Reports -> responsible (deadline) : ECR Fire/ODH (all points) -> S. Grau/M. Gastal/ A.L. Perrot (October 2010) ECR Point-8 -> A.L. Perrot (October 2010) ECR Point-1 -> A.L. Perrot with support from F. Butin (October 2010) ECR Point-5 -> A.L. Perrot with support from M. Gastal (November 2010) R2E Mitigation Project [follow-up]: Project structure and mandate to be defined (confirmed) [Markus] Budget Codes (see proposal) to be allocated (Roberto) Work-Breakdown structure for iteration with groups and preparation for putting it into CERN planning [Luisella, Markus] Power-Converter R&D to be launched [Yves] H4IRRAD to be made possible [Marco, Bart, Ilias] SCL R&D: already launched [Amalia]

7 R2E Mitigation Project Roles & Deliverables
Project planning and coordination Assurance of global mitigation actions and their implementation within the LHC planning Long-term solution for power-converters & evaluation of options Support for all linked R2E activities and assurance of availability of requirements (e.g., test areas) Creation of ‘R2E culture’ & formalization of corresponding rules Deliverables: Mitigation Plan & Required Documentation Evaluation of Radiation Levels & Consequences Budget/resources/timing details & reporting Availability of radiation facilities and radiation test support R2E Policy

8 Mandate R2E Project & Study Group
“The R2E Mitigation Project decides on action priorities, assures a mitigation plan within the LHC planning constraints and steers all R2E mitigation actions. Together with the R2E Study Group it assists LHC operations and equipment groups with expert knowledge and assessments of radiation-induced failures in electronics of the accelerator. The R2E mitigation project is steered by the R2E study group which directly reports to the LMC” R2E Study Group Responsibilities: Forum and steering meeting for R2E Mitigation Project Development of a radiation policy for the accelerator sector Direct link with related activities within the PH department Advising and coordination role for all R2E related subjects and working groups Availability of radiation test possibilities according to LHC requirements R2E Mitigation Project Responsibilities: Minimizing the risk of LHC failures caused by radiation effects on electronics Development and implementation of a R2E mitigation plan coherent with the LHC schedule Evaluation based on radiation monitoring and calculations Study of patch-solutions and radiation tolerant developments Support and review of R&D for radiation tolerant power-converters Study, feasibility analysis and final proposal of long-term mitigation solution Budget planning, steering and optimization of all mitigation actions New radiation test facilities and possibilities within the requirements of the R2E project Linked Activities: Collimation upgrade at IR3 (IR7->3 Move) SCL R&D New radiation test facility in the PS East-Area

9 Monitoring & Mining WG Mandate:
Early monitoring around the LHC critical (R2E) areas Comparison (“benchmarking”) with expected radiation levels Coordination of required Monte-Carlo calculations Improvements for the combined monitoring tool & related issues Possible required improvements for monitor locations & numbers Extrapolation towards nominal LHC operation Development of a standardized reporting of radiation levels Members: RadMons: D.
