5 ATOMS AND ELEMENTS 90 naturally occurring elements (specific arrangements of atoms) (On the periodic table #’s 1-92 EXCEPT FOR 43 and 61 are naturally occurring) 92-2 = 90 Atomic number = number of protons Mass number = number of protons and neutrons Atomic (mass) weight – weight of an average atom of an element given in amu. the number of protons in an atom of an element determines the atom's (atomic number),and the number of electrons determines the (atomic number )of an element. the number of electrons in an atom=the no. of protons=the ATOMIC NUMBER . if you want to calculate the neutrons number for an atom , you can easily make : MASS NUMBER- atomic number mass number = no. of positive protons and neutral neutrons  so,,,the atom consists of positive protons and negative electrons (which resemble the atomic number) and the neutral neutrons .

21 ATOMIC NUMBER The atomic number is equal to the number of protons in an atom's nucleus. The atomic number determines which element an atom is. For example, any atom that contains exactly 47 protons in its nucleus is an atom of silver.

22 Mass Number The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. For example, nitrogen has 7 protons and 7 neutrons in its nucleus, giving it a mass number of 14. PROTONS + NEUTRONS = MASS NUMBER

Electrons constantly move and occupy space around the nucleus in discrete shells or energy levels Shells represent nearly all of the volume of an atom, but only a tiny fraction of the mass Numbers of electrons and protons are equal in a neutral atom Ordinary chemical reactions involve only outermost shell (valence) electrons The most stable configuration for an atom is when each energy level is completely filled.
