2 Setting: During 1994, some of the worst violence in the history of mankind took place in the country of Rwanda (“Hotel Rwanda”).

3 In 1994 in Rwanda, a million members of the Tutsi tribe were killed by members of the Hutu tribe in a massacre that took place while the world stood by and did nothing to help. Hotel Rwanda is not the story of that massacre. It is the story of a hotel manager who saved the lives of 1,200 people by doing whatever he could to protect them when they had no one else to turn to (“Hotel Rwanda”).

4 Paul Rusesabagina (Hutu): manager of the Hotel de Milles Collines does whatever he can to protect the people in the hotel. Tatiana Rusesabagina (Tutsi): Paul’s wife George Rutaganda (Hutu): A supplier runs a warehouse. He wants Paul to come to the rally to show support for the Hutu power, and he gives him a shirt symbolizing the Hutu power. He is the Interhamwe leader, radio announcer, and food distributer. General Bizimungu (Hutu): Head of the Rwandan army. He makes Paul bribe him with liquor and whatever else he can in order to help him protect the people at the hotel. Colonel Oliver: Canadian from the United Nations Peacekeeping force (Nick Nolte). Tries to help Paul, but he can’t do much. _________________________________________________________________________________ Hotel des Les Milles Collines: Hotel Name - The Belgian airline Sabena owned the hotel during the genocide. Rusesabagina bribed the Hutu Interahamwe militia with money and alcohol to keep them from killing the refugees in the hotel. He also managed to provide the refugees with food and water. Kigali, Rwanda: City where the movie takes place (capital of Rwanda) Sabina: Company that owns the Hotel where Paul works RTML: Hutu rebel radio Interahamwe: Hutu extremist militia with the colorful shirts (Ebert) Important Characters

5 Conflicts: Hutu vs. Tutsi—a conflict that started from a class rivalry, with the Tutsis who were thought to have greater wealth and social status (as well as favoring cattle ranching over what is seen as the lower-class farming of the Hutus). Paul Rusesabagina vs. General Bizimungu—Paul has to bribe him in order for the army to keep all the people in the Hotel safe. (African Development)
