8 Open Rack V3 Update Steve Mills
Open Rack V3 is the next generation of Open Rack architecture that we started earlier this year. Open Rack V3 Update Steve Mills

9 What is New for Open Rack V3?
03 02 01 Why Open Rack V3? What is New for Open Rack V3? What is Next? Agenda Here is what I will be covering today. When I am done you should have a better idea what is … new about Open Rack V3 … how we are engaging with the OCP community … and an idea of what is coming in the near future

10 What is New for Open Rack V3?
03 02 01 Why Open Rack V3? What is New for Open Rack V3? What is Next? Agenda So let’s begin with “Why Open Rack V3”

11 Contemporary System Design
Physics Over the last 30 years we have been blessed with a rapid expansion of the capabilities of the technologies on which we all rely. However, almost everyone in this room is coming up against barriers that relate to fundamental constraints of physics. These are problems at the atomic level. It’s foreign territory, and increasingly more expensive to explore. Component makers will still be able to make improvements, but it will require more Research and Development spending to achieve these gains One way to limit the risk and costs associated with taking these next steps is to share these with other interested parties … and that is where OCP comes in. Contemporary System Design

12 Why Open Rack V3? One way to limit the risk and costs associated with taking these next steps is to share these with other interested parties … and that is where OCP comes in. Facebook and others see the value of building infrastructure on a common platform where we can share in the development of new technologies.

13 Why Open Rack V3? Why Open Rack V3?
Facebook’s V1 and V2 platform were developed internally and then open sourced late in the development. The features for these architectures were singularly focused on Facebook’s needs

14 Why Open Rack V3? Why Open Rack V3?
Enable adoption across the OCP community With Open Rack V3, we aim to enable adoption across the OCP community by providing a platform that many users can use to build a solutions that works for them

15 Why Open Rack V3? Why Open Rack V3?
Enable adoption across the OCP community Common rack frame that is adaptable by the community By developing a common frame we should be able to generate larger volumes which will allow us to add features and lower costs for all users To do so, we need to provide flexibility that enables optional features so users can tailor the solution to their specific needs

16 Why Open Rack V3? Why Open Rack V3?
Enable adoption across the OCP community Common rack frame that is adaptable by the community Power Architecture that supports a wide range of applications from 15-33kW We hope to do the same with a Power Architecture by providing a solution that covers a wide range of customer applications outside of just Facebook.

17 Why Open Rack V3? Why Open Rack V3?
Enable adoption across the OCP community Common rack frame that is adaptable by the community Power Architecture that supports a wide range of applications from 15-33kW Provide a platform to enable OCP Advanced Cooling Solutions Finally, we have many new and interesting technologies that are currently in development in OCP’s Advanced Cooling Solutions projects. Open Rack V3 will provide a platform to integrate these new developments into the larger Open Rack architecture.

18 What is New for Open Rack V3?
03 02 01 Why Open Rack V3? What is New for Open Rack V3? What is Next? Agenda Next Let’s talk about what new features we will be adding for Open Rack V3

19 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 I am going to show a list of features that are new to Open Rack V3 – many of which are driven by the community’s needs rather than just Facebook.

20 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Vertical Spacing OpenU (48mm) OpenU and 44.45mm (height only) One of the most interesting new features we are adding is support for both Open Rack’s 48mm spacing AND EIA’s vertical spacing. This will allow users that are currently using EIA racks to build rack configurations with similar densities in Open Rack as well. So, to be clear, we are not supporting EIA widths, only vertical spacing.

21 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Vertical Spacing OpenU (48mm) OpenU and 44.45mm (height only) Dynamic Rating 1400kg 1600 kgs

22 New Features Driven by the Community

26 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Rear Data Fabric No Optional Kit The hot-pluggable rear data plane could offer 3 different types of communication 1> high speed copper 2> high speed optical 3> low speed copper management bus We will see how this progresses.

27 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Rear Data Fabric No Optional Kit Side Panel Air containment only Security or air containment

28 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Rear Data Fabric No Optional Kit Side Panel Air containment only Security or air containment Security Door Yes As well as a security door for co-location deployments

31 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Power Shelf location Fixed Located anywhere on the busbar Fixed due to bolted connections to the busbar

32 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Power Shelf location Fixed Located anywhere on the busbar Power shelf and BBU Integrated Independent and flexible Adds flexibility to size back-up time based on different configurations so the BBU capacity is only deployed where needed Also improves reliability of the system by adding controllers to the BBUs rather than relying on the PSUs like the V2 solution

33 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Power Shelf location Fixed Located anywhere on the busbar Power shelf and BBU Integrated Independent and flexible Peak Power Shaving No Yes

34 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Power Shelf location Fixed Located anywhere on the busbar Power shelf and BBU Integrated Independent and flexible Peak Power Shaving No Yes Power Shelf Input Con Historically, FB used a 5 pin input into the power shelf. By going to a 7 pin input into the power shelf it allows us to remove the PDUs from the rack and reduce the number of L11 rack configurations.

35 New Features Driven by the Community
Facebook V2 Facebook V3 Power Shelf location Fixed Located anywhere on the busbar Power shelf and BBU Integrated Independent and flexible Peak Power Shaving No Yes Power Shelf Input Con # of Power Zones 2 1 Facebook will be going to a single power zone, but the architecture will still allow more zones if a community member still wants them.
