Outline Cellular Concept Concept Of Frequency Reuse
How does cellular system works Handoff
4
Cellular Networks It is an infrastructure network that give rise to the frequency reuse / channel reuse concept

Cell 1 Cell 2 Mobile Telephone Mobile User Switching Center (MTSC)
Given Area is divided into cells . Each cell has base station ( BS ) Cell can be Equilateral Triangle or Square or Regular Hexagonal . But for the given range r of base station the area covered by hexagon is more than the area covered by the triangle or square, Therefore we will be using Hexagon cells . Mobile users attach to network through base station Cell 1 Mobile Telephone Switching Center (MTSC) Mobile User Cordless connection Cell 2 Wired connection Base Station (BS)

Concept of Frequency reuse
Adjacent cells must have different set of frequencies/channels to avoid interference (crosstalk). Cells are grouped into clusters. Each cluster uses the entire available radio spectrum . Therefore, the number of clusters is the number of times the entire spectrum can be used. This is called frequency reuse. f4 f3 f2 f1 f6 f7 f5 f2 f7 f3 Cells with the same number have the same set of frequencies Cluster size =7 f1 f2 f6 f4 f7 f3 f2 f5 f1 f7 f3 f2 f6 f4 f1 f7 f3 f5 f6 f4 f1 f5 f6 f4 f5 If area is not divided then we have to use Single high power antenna => limited number of users If Area is divided into cells => frequency reuse possible => more number of users

When a phone is turned on, it scans and selects the strongest signal sent by BSs
