1 AP Chemistry Chapter 7 Introduction Presentation
Atomic Structure and Periodicity

2 7.1 Electromagnetic Radiation

3

4 Notes ROYGBIV makes up our visible spectrum
The visible portion of the spectrum falls in the middle of the various types of wavelengths We see visible light because of the chemical reactions that take place within our Retina All types of electromagnetic radiation travel at the speed of light Short waves have a high frequency Long Waves will have a lower frequency

5 Properties of Electromagnetic Waves
1. Wavelength – Symbolized with (l) It’s the distance between two consecutive peaks or troughs in a wave measurement Measured in meters 2. Frequency – Symbolized with the greek letter Nu # of waves that pass a give point per second Measured in Hertz (hz) which is (sec-1)

6 Properties 3. Speed (C) Measured in meters per second
Constant value of 3.00 x 108 m/s

7 7.3 The Atomic Spectrum of hydrogen
1. Continuous Spectrum – occurs when white light passes through a prism Contains all the visible wavelengths of light An individual elements spectrum will not contain all the visible wavelengths of light BLS corresponds to the energy of the electrons of the element IF an electron is excited and jumps we say its Quantized (small pocket of energy) Spectrum is produced when excited electrons come back to the ground state
