1 Breeding Bunnies Lab

2 Breeding Bunnies: Background Info
QUIETLY read and complete the background information section. (8 minutes)

3 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
In this lab, you will investigate the changes that take place over time in a simulated population of imaginary bunnies. The bunnies live in an area that has very cold winters. When the bunnies breed, passing on helpful traits will cause the offspring to survive, while inheriting harmful traits will cause the offspring to die. We will look at what happens to the frequency of each gene over time in the population due to the environment.

4 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
Which bunny will survive better in a cold environment?

5 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
Which bunny will survive better in a cold environment? What is going to happen to the frequency of each trait over many generations?

6 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
This is natural selection in action! Which bunny will survive better in a cold environment? What is going to happen to the frequency of each trait over many generations?

7 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
How does this relate to genes?

8 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
How does this relate to genes? Randomly draw 2 beans  bunny is born

9 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
DIE! Survive + =

10 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
In this lab we will…

11 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
The brown beans represent the F allele, the dominant trait for fur. The white beans represent the f allele, the recessive trait for no fur.

12 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
Each bunny needs two alleles (beans). Bunnies born with fur survive, while bunnies born without fur do not survive long enough to reproduce. Complete the below for reference. Beans Selected Genotype Phenotype (Trait) Description Two brown beans FF Homozygous dominant Two white beans Ff Fur Homozygous recessive One brown / one white ff Heterozygous

13 Breeding Bunnies: Framing
QUESTION: How does _________ affect _________? How does _________ change _________? Frequency of desirable and undesirable genes over time Effect of the environment on the bunny population HYPOTHESIS: If… then… because…
