After the First World War: Quebec and Canada were economically prosperous (rich) Many Canadians wanted to escape the horrors and hardships they experienced during the war People living in cities increased their consumption and indulged in more entertainment (radio, movies, restaurants, etc).

Examples of Mass Culture
Radio Radio stations broadcast music, weather reports and specialized shows. In 1936, the federal government founded the CBC (Canadian Broadcast Corporation). Sports Professional sports, like hockey, become increasingly popular. Movies (silent and talkies) People frequently went to watch movies in movie theatres. Most films were American. Music and nightclubs People went to nightclubs to listen to music (jazz) and watch shows.

Prohibition Prohibition: a ban on the production and sale of alcohol
As of 1921, the sale of alcohol in Quebec is controlled by the Commission des liqueurs de Québec. With the exception of some municipalities, the province of Quebec is the only place in North America where the sale of alcohol is not criminalized. This contributed to the popularity of nightclubs in Montreal. 1s

The consumption of goods
During the 1920s, economic prosperity increased people’s purchasing power. Citizens make more money, so they can consume more goods. Access to electricity in the urban areas made it possible to buy appliances. Ex: the use of refrigerators becomes more widespread
