2 Subject Of A Sentence Every sentence has two parts
A Subject A Predicate A “subject” is the part of the sentence about which something is told or asked Essentially, “Who” or “What” is the sentence about? “Who” or “What” is performing the action/verb? A “subject” can be a single term or a group

3 The following are examples of “Subjects”
You will need to write down each example. You will also need to write down the question and the answer.

4 Examples The California gold rush began in 1848.
Question: Who or what is this sentence about? Answer: The California gold rush James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill. Answer: James Marshall If you said “gold”, you need to ask the question, “Who is discovering?” Always remember to ask the question, “Who” or “What” is the sentence about? “Who” or “What” is performing the action/verb?

5 Examples Do gold nuggets sparkle in the sunlight?
Question: Who or what is this sentence about? Answer: gold nuggets The pack of colored markers costs two dollars. Answer: pack of colored markers Does this green necktie match my shirt? Answer: green necktie

6 Examples Someone with muddy boots messed up the floor.
Question: Who or what is this sentence about? Answer: Someone Last year’s fashions are priced affordably. Answer: Last year’s fashions

7 For Practice Write down the following sentences and identify the subject of the sentence by circling it on your paper. The decline of feudalism is a complicated topic. John looked at her with sadness in his eyes. Daniel lost his dog at the park. Jennifer loved the roses. Sunsets are fun to watch.

8 Create Your Own You will need to compose ten sentences and identify the subject of each sentence by circling it. Remember to ask “Who or what is this sentence about?” I will be checking for neatness and accuracy. Take your time and do this well.
