2. Subject Of A Sentence Every sentence has two parts
A Subject
A Predicate
A “subject” is the part of the sentence about which something is told or asked
Essentially, “Who” or “What” is the sentence about? “Who” or “What” is performing the action/verb?
A “subject” can be a single term or a group

3. The following are examples of “Subjects”
You will need to write down each example. You will also need to write down the question and the answer.

4. Examples The California gold rush began in 1848.
Question: Who or what is this sentence about?
Answer: The California gold rush
James Marshall discovered gold at Sutter’s Mill.
Answer: James Marshall
If you said “gold”, you need to ask the question, “Who is discovering?”
Always remember to ask the question, “Who” or “What” is the sentence about? “Who” or “What” is performing the action/verb?

Question: Who or what is this sentence about?
Answer: gold nuggets
The pack of colored markers costs two dollars.
Answer: pack of colored markers
