1 Discursive Writing Learning Intention Success Criteria
(Re)Introducing ourselves to discursive writing. What is it? What are its main features? What kinds of things could you write about? Take some notes on its main features Be able to come up with some arguments about common topics Start to think about a topic of your own

2 Task 1 Read through pp Take brief notes, in any way you wish (mind map, list…) on the main features of discursive writing.

3 Task 2 a) Complete the task at the BOTTOM of pg 196
b) Choose a two or three of the examples and make a quick plan about what arguments you would make about this topic. You can be PERSUASIVE (one sided) or ARGUMENTATIVE (two sided)

4 Task 3 Start to think about topics you could write about. Create some initial planning mind maps. They should be something you feel strongly about. You should attempt to be original (don’t use examples straight from book, at least take a different ‘angle’)

5 Task 4 One newspaper per group Each pupil choose an opinion article
Identify the persuasive techniques What makes it effective?

6 Task 5 Decide on a potential topic for your discursive writing.
Complete an initial proposal sheet. Miss Mackintosh will check these and decide whether they are appropriate choices that can be sustained for a whole essay. Decide – persuasive or argumentative? It is a good idea to set yourself a question and spend the essay answering it.
