2 Request for Flexibility Interest Form
School: Randolph Elementary School Learning Community: South Concept Name STEEM Professional Development Days (3 days) Strategic Initiative Focus Area #1: Instructional Rigor and Relevance Brief Description of the Need/Challenge (with supporting data) If we want all young people to possess the higher-order thinking skills they need to succeed in the 21st century, we need educators who possess higher-order teaching skills and deep content knowledge (NSDC, 2009). Randolph’s teachers and support personnel need in-depth professional learning opportunities to increase our instructional capacity and support our STEM initiative. The training should be offered in a setting that is free of interruptions to allow the instructional staff and administrators to fully focus on the professional development that is needed to increase student achievement. Brief Description of the Concept and How It Addresses the Need/Challenge Randolph is requesting flexibility to implement a modified school calendar in order to allow teachers and support personnel the opportunity to engage in STEM curriculum development and professional learning opportunities to support our effort to obtain certification. We will work in collaborative teams interdependently to clarify what students must learn, gather evidence of student learning, analyze the evidence, identify the most powerful teaching strategies/best practices, and transfer those strategies across all team members (Carroll, Fulton, and Doerr, 2010). Expected Results The overall expected result of this RFF is that students’ performance in the areas of math and science will increase; as well as their proficiency in the use of instructional technology to enhance personalized learning. In the short-term, we will increase the visibility of rigor, relevance, technology and content knowledge in the classroom through professional development. Long-term, student achievement in math and science will be increased and our students preparedness for middle school will be demonstrated by their use 21st century skills. Anticipated Cost and anticipated funding source The school budget will not be impacted and there are no additional costs associated with this request for flexibility. Known Implications The lose of three instructional days
