1 Starter: Week 4: August 29 Why is it important to record data in an experiment?

2 Essential question: Why is it important to be able to graph and interpret data?

3 Graphing

4 What is graphing?: Effective tools used to compare data in clear, concise, and visual terms. Types of graph: Bar graphs Pie charts Line graph

5 What is a line graph? Horizontal x-axis for years (don’t change)
Vertical y-axis for scores (change) Plot your points, then connect the dots Shows change

6 1. What’s your conclusion
1. What’s your conclusion? Is minimum wage increasing or decreasing over time?

7 What is a bar graph? Title Horizontal x-axis (category)
Vertical y-axis (number) Compares amounts

8 Output 2. What is your conclusion from these results?

9 3. What question is being answered? Title?

10 What is a pie chart? Shows how a quantity breaks into parts

11 What are the elements of a Graph?
Scale Units Label Title Accuracy Neatness

12 SCALE: April May June 30 15 5 Inches of rainfall -- GOOD SCALE --
BAD SCALE 30 -- 30 -- 25 -- 20 -- 15 -- 15 -- 10 -- 5 -- 5 -- -- -- -- -- -- June -- -- -- April May April May June

13 Units and Labels April May June Inches of rainfall 30 15 5
Labels with Units -- Units and Labels Missing!!! -- 30 -- 30 -- 25 -- 20 -- 15 -- Rainfall (inches) 15 -- 10 -- 5 -- 5 -- -- -- -- -- -- June -- -- -- April May April May June Month

14 Title April May June Inches of rainfall 30 15 5 Rainfall by Month
Weather -- Appropriate Title Inappropriate Title -- 30 -- 30 -- 25 -- 20 -- 15 -- Rainfall (inches) 15 -- 10 -- 5 -- 5 -- -- -- -- -- -- June -- -- -- April May April May June Month

15 4. Can you create a better title?
Height (inches) Type of Fertilizer

16 Accuracy! April May June Inches of rainfall 30 15 5 -- -- 30 -- 25 --
20 -- 15 -- 10 -- 5 -- -- -- -- -- April May June

17 Neatness!!

18 5. Error analysis-What’s missing?

19 6.Error Analysis-What’s Missing?

20 7. How do students feel about student uniforms?(student survey)

21 Starter:August 29 What is the type of music young adults like
Starter:August 29 What is the type of music young adults like? (what’s your conclusion?)

22 Station 1 Bar Graph

23 Station 1: Answer the following questions with complete sentences.
What does the x-axis represent? What does the y-axis represent? How many hours were spent watching TV? How many more hours were spent sleeping than playing outside? How many hours total are represented in the bar graph? What is this graph used for?

24 Station 2 Pie Chart

25 Station 2: Answer the following questions with complete sentences.
What is the least favorite type of movie? Which categories were the same? What were the total number of surveys? How do you know? Why is it important for charts to have titles and subtitles? What is a pie chart used for?

26 Station 3: Line Graph

27 Station 3: Line Graph How many days were tested?
Which day will you have the most retention? Why do you think so? What happens after 31 days? Explain some ways you can raise the percentage after 1 day. Reflect this with your studies, what can you do differently so you won’t forget the material after 31 days.

28 Station 4 Read the paragraph about the eclipse.
Look at Costa’s Level of Questioning. Based on the paragraph, I want you to write a Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3 question. ex. Level 1: What is the scientific method. Level 2: Why is the scientific method important to keep organized information? Level 3: Imagine being a scientist, what would happen if they did not keep a detailed report of the scientific method for what they are studying.

29 Station 4 Paragraph With parties in campsites, small towns, rooftops and beaches along the 4200km path of totality*, the United States was briefly a nation of amateur* astronomers as they peered skyward in protective glasses to watch the moon black out the Sun. The last coast-to-coast eclipse was in 1918, long before the advent* of smartphones meant yesterday’s 91 minute solar show became the most photographed and documented event in human history. Solar eclipses happen when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun’s rays and plunging* part of the world into darkness during the day. An eclipse of this magnitude* provides scientists with a unique ability to study the Earth, Sun, Moon and other stars and planets.

30 Station 5: Read over the following questions and tell me which Level of Costa’s question is it. What is the cell? Imagine being in a building that was attacked by the Joker, how would you feel if you were stuck in their battle. Compare and contrast Batman and the Joker. In the movie, Beauty and the Beast, why would the Beast be a bad guy. Write a Level 3 question about your favorite movie.

31 Station 6: Create a flow chart, a diagram showing the sequence (order) of things. Ex: breakfast school homework dinner walk the dog

32 Station 6: Flow Chart Make a flow chart for the steps of the scientific method. Explain this chart:

33 Station 7: Penny Water Lab
Question: How many drops of water does it take to cover a penny? Hypothesis: Procedure: Add and count the drops of water it takes to cover the penny. Data: Number of drops___________ Conclusion: Was your hypothesis correct?

34 Station 8 –Floating Egg Observation:
Inference: Why does one egg float and the other sink? Sketch: Sketch a drawing of both cups. If we used other liquids, will the egg sink or float?

35 Station 9: Cup Tower Compete with your table! Build a paper tower that is the tallest, and won’t fall apart! Sketch: Your final tower.

36 Station 10: Legos Build something with just 4 legos. Draw.
Fill the rectangle without going over its edges. Build a fruit, and see if your partner can guess it. Make a pattern with LEGOS. Color and draw. Build a bridge that can hold a cell phone. Build something with one hand.
