1 Red Herring By: Seth Melrose

2 Red Herring A Red Herring is a fallacy in which an irrelevant topic is presented in order to divert attention from the original issue. The basic idea is to "win" an argument by leading attention away from the argument and to another topic

3 Universal Example “Sure, we haven’t given raises in over five years to our employees. You know, we work really hard to make a good product. We try to ensure the best customer service, too.” This is red herring because they're diverting from the subject of raises, and bringing up that they work hard and ensure the best customer service.

4 Red Herring in The Crucible
Proctor, Act One, Page 176 Abigail: Gah! I’d almost forgot how strong you are, John Proctor! Proctor: What’s this mischief here? Abigail: Oh, she’s only gone silly somehow. John is directing attention away from the fact that she thinks he's strong by bringing up the conflict with Mercy Lewis and Mary warren.

5 Red Herring in The Crucible
Paris, Act Three, Page 211 Proctor: Excellency, does it not strike upon you that so many of these women have lived so long with such upright reputation, and- Paris: Do you read the gospel, Mr. Proctor? Proctor: I read the gospel. Paris asks Proctor if he reads the gospel which is completely irrelevant to what proctor was saying.
