Developed and delivered by CANS in partnership with:

2 The Building Futures for Youth Program
Piloted in 2008 in HRSB - to increase the number of Nova Scotia Youth exploring careers in construction Three part program: Application/selection Safety training Summer work placement Province wide in 2010 – all communities and regional school boards Close to 600 students from Sydney to Yarmouth Over 200 host employers – predominantly private sector Used as a model for programs in other provinces and industries

3 How the Program Works Grade 10 & 11 high school Co-op & O2 students apply to CANS Pre-screened using industry developed criteria & representatives Once accepted, students go to NSCC for 80 hours of industry specific training Registered as Construction Trades Pre-Apprentices (temporary work permits) Paid summer work placement (5–7 weeks)

4 Participant Outcomes Students: Exposure to construction industry
Construction safety training Understanding of apprenticeship model – 300 pre-apprenticeship hours 3 High school Cooperative Education Credits Paid summer work Scholarship opportunities Host Employers: Develop & retain future workforce A summer employee - prepared for work in the construction industry ID potential futures employees/trades people Exposure to schools - students, teachers & community based learning Support career exploration

5 Participant Responsibilities
Students: Meet all program stage deadlines & requirements Mandatory attendance Adhere to workplace rules & standards Maintain accurate & up-to-date logbook Host Employers: Provide a paid summer work placement Provide a safe work environment Designate a workplace mentor Participate in ongoing student evaluation
