1 Chapter 5: Cell Growth and Division

2 Why do cells divide? Growth of organisms. Healing (cuts, burns, etc.).
Cells have size limits. a. If too small, they cannot contain necessary organelles. b. If too large they cannot take in enough materials (oxygen, nutrients) or get rid of waste adequately. Large cells do not have adequate surface area for exchange of materials.

3 4. Volume increases faster than surface area so they must divide
a. There are some cells that must be large and they have unique shapes with large surface areas and small increases in volume. (Ex. neurons)

4 Cell size is limited. Volume increases faster than surface area.

5 Cells divide at different rates.
The rate of cell division varies with the need for those types of cells.

6 The Cell Cycle Cell cycle: the sequence of growth, DNA replication, and division of a cell. The cell cycle is divided into two periods 1. interphase: the period of growth (G1, S, G2 phases) 2. M phase: the period of division (mitosis and cytokinesis).

8 Interphase The period of growth. Busiest part of the cell cycle.
Cell grows in size and carries on metabolism. Three stages: 1. Gap 1 (G1 phase)- cell grows in size and proteins are produced. More organelles are also produced.

9 2. Synthesis (S phase)- chromosomes duplicate; this is the only time that DNA is produced. At the end of this stage, the cell has two complete sets of DNA. 3. Gap 2 (G2 phase)- short period of growth. Cell parts needed for cell division are assembled.

10 M Phase (mitosis & cytokinesis)
Two processes are involved in the cell division phase (1) mitosis- division of the cell nucleus and its contents. (2) cytokinesis- the process that divides the cytoplasm.

12 Chromosomes Chromosome: one long continuous thread of DNA that consists of numerous genes. Humans have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs) DNA condenses into chromosomes at the start of mitosis  DNA wraps itself around proteins called histones which cause it to condense

14 DNA plus proteins is called chromatin.
One half of a duplicated chromosome is a chromatid. Sister chromatids are held together at the centromere. Telomeres protect DNA and do not include genes. telomere centromere Chromatid telomere Condensed, duplicated chromosome

15 Mitosis Mitosis = division of the nucleus and its contents---produces two genetically identical daughter cells. Mitosis produces all of the cells in your body with the exception of gametes (egg and sperm) which are produced by a cell division process called meiosis.

16 Mitosis is divided into 4 phases:
Prophase Metaphase Anaphase Telophase

17 Prophase 1st and longest phase. Chromatin coils into chromosomes.
Nuclear envelope breaks down. Nucleolus disappears. Centrioles begin to migrate to opposite sides (poles) of the cell. Spindle fibers begin to form between the centrioles. Spindle= football shaped structure that chromosomes attach to by their centromeres. Spindle fibers centrioles

18 Metaphase 2nd phase of mitosis.
chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers by their centromeres. The chromosomes line up in the middle (equator) of the cell. Spindle Doubled chromosomes at equator.

19 Anaphase 3rd phase of mitosis.
The centromeres split apart, and the sister chromatids separate. The chromatids are pulled apart to opposite sides of the cell.

20 Telophase 4th and final phase.
The chromatids reach the opposite poles of the cell. Chromosomes uncoil. Spindle breaks down. Nucleolus reappears. Nuclear envelope forms around each new set of chromosomes.

21 Cytokinesis Cytokinesis: division of the cytoplasm into two new cells.
Different in animal and plant cells. Animal cells- the cell membrane pinches inward to form a trench. Plant cells- cell plate forms.

23 Regulation of the Cell Cycle
The cell cycle is regulated by groups of proteins called growth factors and cyclins. Growth factors: stimulate cell growth Cyclins: help regulate cell growth

24 Cell division is uncontrolled in cancer
Normal animal cells stop dividing when they come in contact with one another Cancer cells do not respond to cyclins and divide uncontrollably

25 Cancer cells divide continuously and form masses called tumors that may damage surrounding tissues
Benign tumor: cancer cells remain clustered together and can be easily removed Malignant tumor: cancer cells may break away, or metastasize from the tumor

26 Causes of Cancer Carcinogens: substances that cause cancer
Examples: - tobacco - air pollutants - viruses (HPV) - sun exposure

27 Section 5.4: Asexual Reproduction

28 Prokaryotes such as bacteria must reproduce asexually
Asexual reproduction: creation of offspring from a single parent without the joining of gametes Binary fission produces two daughter cells genetically identical to the parent cell. Binary fission occurs in prokaryotes.

29 Remember: bacteria have no nuclei nor spindle fibers and most bacteria have only one circular chromosome This chromsome duplicates and the two move apart from one another while a cell wall forms between them during cytokinesis

31 There are advantages and disadvantages to asexual reproduction:
Asexual reproduction is an advantage in consistently favorable conditions. Sexual reproduction is an advantage in changing conditions.

32 Some eukaryotes can reproduce through mitosis.
Budding: new organism is formed from a small projection growing on the surface of the parent (yeast) bud Hydra Yeast

33 Fragmentation: the splitting of the parent into pieces that each grow into a new organism (flatworms, sea stars) Vegetative reproduction: forms a new plant from the modification of a stem or underground structure on the parent plant (strawberries, potatoes)
