1 In Year Module Retrieval (IYMR)
Sid Hayes – Director of Education Paul Cecil – Quality & Standards Manager October 2016

2 Connects the three areas.
Brief overview and headlines. Plenty of time for questions and discussion, Paul and myself are learning a lot. Already met most HoS.

3 Headlines Participating modules must have an assessment in semester 1 (this includes year-long modules) A list of participating modules will be published (modules will also be flagged on studentcentral) Students failing an assessment may opt in to the retrieval opportunity (but are not required to do so) All participating modules will provide a tutorial session for students

4 Timeframes The in-year retrieval period is immediately before Easter and the submission deadline across the University will be midday on Friday 7th April 2017 week 1 of the Easter break. This allows time for marking, feedback and tutorials from semester 1 to take place to inform student work, whilst minimizing the disruption to the teaching year.

5 Headlines Participating modules must be approved on the IYMR template
There are no KIS or CMA implications The retrieval will be in the form of correcting work (or components of work) and should not entail a full re-assessment Students will remain eligible for referral and repeat attempts irrespective of whether they engage with IYMR

6 1) What type of assessments are suitable for in-year module retrieval?
The assessment mode must enable retrieval by means of correcting the original submission. This is most likely to work effectively on modules with written assessments (e.g. essay) or some other form of structured written assessments (e.g. poster, portfolio), Individual schools may wish to consider other forms of assessment for this process if they are able to administer them effectively. It is not suitable for examination assessments where structured re-examination would be required.

7 What administrative processes are associated with in-year module retrieval?
Academic Services will be working with school administrations to ensure that we can capture retrieval attempts and manage examination board reporting. Key elements also include: Flagging that a module is participating Identifying tutorial dates Confirming and recording the retrieval activity Further advice will be circulated during the autumn term

8 40% The maximum mark for the retrieval piece of work is 40%.
If a student has a subsequent assessment task to complete on the module the student is entitled to receive the full mark for subsequent assessed work which can then be added to the maximum mark of 40% for the retrieval work, giving an overall percentage for the module. If the module has a single assessment point which falls within timelines for in-year retrieval then the maximum mark for the retrieval piece of work and for the module is 40%.

9 Feedback and marking of in-year module retrieval work
Students will have received detailed feedback on their original attempt. There is no requirement to provide further feedback on the in-year module retrieval work. Marking of in-year module retrieval work should be shared appropriately between module team members.

10 Does a student have to have attempted the assessment to qualify for in-year module retrieval?

11 Where do students find out about in-year module retrieval?
Information will be published to students via a range of information points including: GEAR StudentCentral, module areas We will also be working closely with Schools and UBSU to ensure that general information is widely available.

12 Module specification changes
In the pilot year (2016/17) we will publish a list of participating modules. We do not require module specifications that are already published to be amended.

13 Heads of school to nominate a minimum of 5 modules by 30th October as ‘participating modules’
These modules will be reviewed for suitability and a final list published by 30th November
