1 10th Grade ATC lesson Tuesday Dec. 6, 2011
Instructions: For this lesson, you will be applying the law of conservation of mass by balancing given chemical equations. The following slide will outline the process. Complete the practice and hand in to your teacher by Thursday Dec. 8, 2011.

2 Given Chemical Equation: __ Mg +__ O2  __ MgO
Step 1. Count the number of atoms for the reactants and products. Step 2. It is clear that the number of oxygen atoms on the side of the reactants and on the side of the products is not equal. Coefficients must be used in order to satisfy the Law of Conservation of Mass and balance the equation. _2_ Mg + _1_ O2  _2_ MgO Reactants Products Mg = 1 O = 2 Mg = 1 O = 1 Reactants Products Mg = 2 O = 2 Mg = 2 O = 2

3 Your Turn. Hand the completed assignment in to your teacher by Thurs
Your Turn. Hand the completed assignment in to your teacher by Thurs. Dec. 8. ____ Al + ____ O2  ____ Al2O3 ____ LiNO3 + ____ Ag  ____ AgNO3 + ____ Li ____ KCl + ____ Mg(OH)2  ____ KOH + ____ MgCl2 ____ Na2O  ____ Na + ____O2 ____ H2 + ____ O2  ____H2O
