2-6 Sedimentary Rocks Unit 2: Rocks and Minerals October 24, 2011 Sanders

2 Vocabulary Clastic: Non-clastics:
sedimentary rocks made up of pieces of rock Non-clastics: sedimentary rocks made up of dissolved minerals, or the remains of living things

3 Vocabulary Chemical rock: Organic:
chemical rock is rock make of minerals that were once dissolved in water. Organic: organic rock is rock made up of substances that were once part of or made up of living things

5 Sedimentary Classification
Sedimentary rocks are classified according to their manner of origin of formation Clastic Chemical Organic

6 Sedimentary Rock Nearly 75% of the top 15 km of the earth's crust is made of sedimentary rock. However, sedimentary rock constitutes nearly 75% of the exposed rock on the earth's surface.

7 Beds Sedimentary rocks often consist of thin flat sheets, called beds.

8 Formation These beds form when sedimentary deposits are buried, compressed, and cemented together.

9 Clasic Sedimentary rock, such as this sandstone, forms when layers of sediment are compacted and cemented together.

10 Chemical Rocks Sedimentary rock can also form when a solution containing dissolved minerals evaporates and leaves behind mineral deposits. The “White Cliffs of Dover” are made of deposited seashells.

11 Deposited Materials Sedimentary Rock is rock formed by the deposits of mineral and particles left behind by of water or, wind or glacial Ice.
