1 Critical Thinking This one requires a bit of explanation, so you will turn this one in and I will have to check it later. Make sure you explain in a way that I will understand you actually know the answer. You will have three minutes to complete the puzzle. No talking!

2 The Situation: There are three boxes, one contains only apples, one contains only oranges, and one contains both apples and oranges.  All three of the boxes have been incorrectly labeled such that no label identifies the actual contents of the box it labels.  Opening just one box, and without looking in the box, you take out one piece of fruit.  By looking at the fruit, how can you immediately label all of the boxes correctly.  Which box did you open and how can you be sure to label all boxes correctly?

3 The Answer: The box that must be opened is the one labeled "apples and oranges."  By definition, whichever fruit is inside, is the only fruit type that that box contains.  Let's say that you found an apple in that box that was labeled with both apples and oranges; because you know it must therefore only contain apples, then you conclude that the box that is labeled "oranges" cannot contain only oranges, as all boxes have been said to be mislabeled.  Thus, the box labeled "oranges" must contain both apples and oranges, leaving the box labeled "apples" to contain only oranges.

Scores will be combined – my score 60% - combined peer scores 40% and entered as a grade for your work today.

15 Group Activities Today
ACTIVITY ONE Finish questions 4, 5, 6, and especially 7 together. Discuss and consider how understanding this might affect your own writing/essay. Review your own essays – how have you organized it? Do you have topic sentences for all body paragraphs? Have you pulled effective quotes from the text, identified rhetorical strategies used, and explained the function/effect? ACTIVITY TWO READ and DISCUSS page 1 – be sure you understand fully. Carefully examine the student body paragraph on page 2 and discuss how each of the 6 comments might be revised. Try revising two at the bottom of page 2. Look at the third page and discuss how each item has been revised. ACTIVITY THREE Review and discuss the power/strong verbs on the first page. Revise at least one of your body paragraphs on page 2. Consider the items listed on page 2. Help each other with the revision process. You can learn as much, if not more, by revising someone else’s essay. This will also give you a chance to see how others have written.
