Abnormal adherens junctions between hub cells and GSCs in Lar mutants.
Abnormal adherens junctions between hub cells and GSCs in Lar mutants. (A,B) Electron micrographs show the interface between hub cells and GSCs in (A) wild-type and (B) Lar451/Lar2127 mutant Drosophila testes. The dashed blue line lies adjacent to the membrane between a hub cell on the left and a GSC on the right. Red boxes enclose adherens junctions in wild type (1-3) and possible adherens junctions in Lar mutants (4-6). Magnified images of the areas enclosed by the red boxes are shown beneath. (C-D′) 0- to 1-day-old wild-type (C,C′) and Lar451/Lar2127 mutant (D,D′) adult testes immunostained with anti-E-cadherin (green, C,D; white C′,D′), co-stained with anti-Vasa (red) to mark germ cells. Arrows (C′,D′) indicate that E-cadherin is present at the hub-GSC interface. Arrowhead indicates a Lar451/Lar2127 mutant GSC that lacks E-cadherin at the hub-GSC interface. Scale bars: 500 nm in A,B; 25 μm in C-D′. Shrividhya Srinivasan et al. Development 2012;139: © 2012.
