1 Bar Charts

2 Objectives By the end of this section, students should be able to:
represent data in a bar chart. Use a chart.

3 Bar Charts As the name suggests, a Bar Chart is a graph with rectangular bars. The bars can be vertically placed.

4 Bar Charts Or the bars can be horizontally placed.

5 Bar Charts In both cases, a Bar Chart is used to represent the data that has been collected, such that the required characteristics can be visually compared. Here, the highest number of students got a ‘B’ while the least number of students got a ‘D’. The Bar Chart makes it visually easier to depict such small features.

6 Bar Charts Representing the data collected about the brand of mobile versus the number of students. Step 1: Decide on the type of Bar Graph. Step 2: Place the elements on one axis. Step 3: Locate the numerical values for each element. Step 4: Draw the Bar for each element.

7 Bar Charts The data can be represented horizontally on a bar chart.
Note: Teacher to point out that Nokia is the most common brand of mobile phone among the 20 students and Motorola is the least common one.

8 Bar Charts The bar can also be drawn vertically as follows:

9 Bar Charts Features of a bar chart. (Refer to the above bar charts)
We must give a title: Brand of Mobile Phones of Students. We must label the axes properly. Vertical axis: Number of students Horizontal axis: Brand of mobile phone We should use a suitable scale. In this example, the vertical axis varies from 0 to 12 and are spaced at 2-unit intervals. All bars should be drawn of equal width. We must leave same space between consecutive bars. We may shade the bars to make it appear attractive.
