Nympholepsy In Classical Greece
Stems from the Greek words “nymphe,” meaning “beautiful young woman” or “bride” and the word “epilepsis,” meaning “seizure” The belief that individuals could be possessed by Nymphs (or poetically inspired by Nymphs) A Nympholept was a person who showed great religious devotion and/or infatuation to the Nymphs Once a man was seized he had to dedicate himself to that nymph’s cult Archedemos and the Vari Cave According to inscriptions found in the cave, the sanctuary was built by Archedemus of Thera. He identified himself as a nympholept and states that he built the sanctuary "at the Nymph's counsel".
