1 “Overcoming Our Evil Conscience Through Christ”
Part 2 “Understanding Our Distress” Psalm 34

2 Hebrews 10:19-22

3 and since we have a great priest over the house of God,
Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the holy places by the blood of Jesus, by the new and living way that He opened for us through the curtain, that is, through His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God,

4 with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience
let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, with our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience

5 What has dominated your thoughts this week?
Have these thoughts brought your soul joy? What have you talked about with others the most this week? Has this brought you and them into a closer fellowship with God?

6 “God is the highest good of the reasonable creature, and the enjoyment of Him is the only happiness with which our souls can be satisfied To go to heaven fully to enjoy God, is infinitely better than the most pleasant accommodations here.

7 Fathers and mothers, husbands, wives, children, or the company of earthly friends, are mere shadows. But the enjoyment of God is the substance. These are just scattered beams, but God is the sun. These are just streams, but God is the fountain. These are just drops, but God is the ocean.”- Jonathan Edwards

9 1. The distress of one’s soul has nothing to do with his/her circumstances and everything to do with his/her connection to God. Psalm 63:1-8

10 O God, You are my God; earnestly I seek You; my soul thirsts for You; my flesh faints for You, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water.

11 So I have looked upon You in the sanctuary, beholding Your power and glory.
Because Your steadfast love is better than life, my lips will praise You.

12 So I will bless You as long as I live; in Your name I will lift up my hands.

13 My soul will be satisfied as with fat and rich food, and my mouth will praise You with joyful lips,
when I remember You upon my bed, and meditate on You in the watches of the night;

14 My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.
for You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I will sing for joy. My soul clings to You; Your right hand upholds me.

15 2. The blessed soul is not one that is happy in its circumstances, but one that finds its delight in God. Psalm 1:1-3

16 walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the wicked, nor stands in the way of sinners, nor sits in the seat of scoffers;

17 but his delight is in the law of the LORD, and on His law
he meditates day and night.

18 and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

19 and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

20 and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.
He is like a tree planted by streams of water that yields its fruit in its season, and its leaf does not wither. In all that he does, he prospers.

21 The Lord’s Table The Bread 1 Corinthians 11:23-24

22 For I received from the Lord what I also delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night when He was betrayed took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it, and said, “This is My body which is for you Do this in remembrance of Me.”

23 3. The blessed soul is one that sees life through eyes that are focused on God, not eyes that are focused on one’s self. Psalm 34

24 My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad.
I will bless the LORD at all times; His praise shall continually be in my mouth. My soul makes its boast in the LORD; let the humble hear and be glad. Oh, magnify the LORD with me, and let us exalt His name together!

25 I sought the LORD, and Me answered me and delivered me from all my fears.
Those who look to Him are radiant, and their faces shall never be ashamed.

26 This poor man cried, and the LORD heard him and saved him out of all his troubles.
The angel of the LORD encamps around those who fear Him, and delivers them.

27 Oh, taste and see that the LORD is good!
Blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him!

28 Oh, fear the LORD, you His saints, for those who fear Him have no lack!
The young lions suffer want and hunger; but those who seek the LORD lack no good thing.

29 Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.
What man is there who desires life and loves many days, that he may see good?

30 Keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking deceit.
Turn away from evil and do good; seek peace and pursue it.

31 The eyes of the LORD are toward the righteous and His ears toward their cry.
The face of the LORD is against those who do evil, to cut off the memory of them from the earth.

32 The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

33 He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the LORD delivers him out of them all. He keeps all his bones; not one of them is broken.

34 Affliction will slay the wicked, and those who hate the righteous will be condemned.
The LORD redeems the life of His servants; none of those who take refuge in Him will be condemned.

35 The Lord’s Table The Cup 1 Corinthians 11:25-26

36 In the same way also He took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until He comes.

37 Zechariah 13:7-9

38 “Awake, O sword, against My shepherd, against the man who stands next to Me,” declares the LORD of hosts “Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will bring back My hand over the little ones.

39 In the whole land, declares the LORD, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.

40 And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested.

41 They will call upon My name, and I will answer them. I will say,
‘They are My people’; and they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.’”
