(A) SUMO is shown in yellow, and the SUMO binding motif from the SUMO∼RanGAP1-Ubc9-Nup358/RanBP2 complex is in magenta (Reverter and Lima, 2005).
(B) SUMO is shown in yellow, with its additionally folded N-terminal strand in magenta, from the SUMO-E1 complex (Lois and Lima, 2005).
(C) Ubiquitin is shown in yellow, with residues essential for viability of S. cerevisiae colored by their location to two patches (Sloper-Mould et al., 2001). The “Ile44” surface and C terminus, where all currently characterized ubiquitin binding domains interact, are colored cyan. Residues in the “Phe4” surface of unknown function are colored red.
