1 NRRA FLEX TEAM MIX REJUVENATOR TAP MEETING
Michael Vrtis, Ph.D. | Research Project Engineer 6/17/2019 mndot.gov

2 Agenda Synthesis Field Sections Status / Schedule Materials Costs
Research Contract Actions items RED= NOTES TAKEN DURING MEETING 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

3 Synthesis This synthesis will summarize the experiences that each NRRA member State has had regarding asphalt mixture rejuvenators. It is intended to share implementation projects to facilitate transfer of knowledge and provide guidance to NRRA Mix Rejuvenator Test Sections (Phase II)” Introduce Sheue and Tom Wood from WSB What information would be useful for producers? What information would be useful from producers? Review questions at end of call if time permits- NO TIME GRANT FROM SUPERIOR BOWEN SHARED PROJECTS SURVEY WILL BE SENT TO ALL TAP MEMBERS WSB WILL CONTACT PRODUCER PARTICIPANTS INDIVIDUALLY 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

5 Synthesis State member to send survey to??? Michigan- Kevin Kennedy

6 Field Sections Trunk Highway 6 13.4 miles Emily to Outing, MN
2” mill (4.5”-6.0” existing HMA) 2” lift – HMA 12.5 max 1.5” lift - HMA 9.5 max High RAP / Rejuvenators in this lift 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

7 Status / Schedule Construction- mid to end of August
High RAP Mix Design submitted 2 weeks prior to construction Contractor will try to get it to us earlier Week of July 15- Contractor should have aggregate stockpiles Samples can be obtained in July and sent to each producer for dosage testing. Mix will have to be built from components shipped prior to receiving final mix design from contractor. 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

8 Materials - RAP RAP at MnDOT
75 Cores taken on 6/13/19 throughout project ≈PG 75.3 – 24.8 (PG 70 – 22) 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

9 Materials - Aggregate Contractor using new quarry
Equipment into quarry week of 7/8 Agg stockpiles ready week of 7/15 Can be obtained and shipped week of 7/22 Received by end of July (i.e., ready for dosage testing once mix design is obtained) 500 lbs of “approximate aggregate” at MnDOT now 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

10 Materials – Virgin Binder
MnDOT obtained 6/26/19. Received 5 1-gallon cans instead of 5 5-gallon cans Submitted for continuous PG on 6/27/19 Can request more from refinery 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

11 Materials – Rejuvenator / Recycling Agent
Rejuvenator will be supplied by the producer to the contractor for in-line blending at the HMA plant Ship to contractor beginning of August. More details later Dosage State agencies members will be voting on: A- Dosage based on mfg. recommendation only B- Dosage to reach target (PG) What is target? (xx-34)? Each producer will be responsible for providing the required dosage for their product to be used in the high RAP mix design. Materials will be provided for testing Dosage is determined by producer. The project is not dictating a target PG grade? 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

12 LTPP Bind Target PG xx-34 even though MnDOT would use 58-28
For this job 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

13 Costs Additional cost to contractor to include field sections = $65,000 (construction delay + pump + mix design) Paid directly to Anderson Brothers 7 Confirmed participants = $9,285 per participant 4 unconfirmed participants = $5,910 per participant STATE member vote needed for this Is this project going to allow terminally blended / Polymer Binder sections? Tanker will be needed Contractor open to switching tankers for polymer binders 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

14 Research Contract Construction summary and experiment design – MnDOT/NRRA ≈$100,000 available for Long-term Evaluation and Reporting Performance testing? Aging? Round Robin similar to NRRA overlays? Annual binder testing to determine stability over time MnDOT will monitor IRI and cracking Likely need RFP 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

15 Action Items MnDOT Rejuvenator producers All TAP Members
Compile list of material needed and addresses for dosage testing Change order to contract Send out items to state agency members to vote Check TH 6 construction history for original binder type Rejuvenator producers Confirm participation Submit request for material needed for dosage All TAP Members Complete survey!!! Ideas for project RFP 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

16 Other items High RAP mix design needs to use some rejuvenator – Gerry Reinke MnDOT will look at grouping rejuvenators on base/source type Blindly select rejuvenator to be used in design Rejuvenator cost information and economic analysis Needs to be further discussed if cost info will be shared and compared for these sections Grant W. and Gerry R. stated that costs/economics should be reported 7/3/2019 mndot.gov

17 Thank you again! Michael Vrtis, Ph.D. Michael.Vrtis@state.mn.us
